Frazier scheduled to meet with the Rams

Frazier scheduled to meet with Rams

The Vikings defensive coordinator is one of two known contenders for St. Louis' head coaching job.

    By JUDD ZULGAD, Star Tribune

    Last update: January 12, 2009 - 12:00 AM

Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier received some good news and some bad news this weekend in his quest to become an NFL head coach.

The bad came Sunday night when a Denver Broncos spokesman said the team has reached agreement with New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to become the Broncos coach. An announcement of a deal between the 32-year-old McDaniels and the Broncos is expected to be made today, according to ESPN, which first reported the hiring. Frazier was believed to be a finalist for that job after interviewing last week.

The good news for Frazier came in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch report that said he is a finalist for the Rams position despite not having a preliminary interview. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Frazier is scheduled to meet with Rams officials on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Frazier and Jim Haslett, who finished this season as interim coach of the Rams, are the two known finalists.

Frazier likely was allowed to skip the first round of interviews because Rams General Manager Billy Devaney interviewed him last winter for the then-vacant Atlanta Falcons coaching job. Mike Smith got the position, but Frazier left a good impression on Devaney, who was hired by the Rams last February.

The Rams continued to conduct preliminary interviews on Sunday, talking with Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan in Baltimore.

Frazier also remains a candidate for the Detroit job, but it appears the Lions might be going in a different direction.

Fox's Jay Glazer reported that Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz would arrive in Detroit on Sunday for a second interview with the Lions and that Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was likely to get a second interview this week.

Spagnuolo became free to deal with teams about jobs after New York was knocked out of the playoffs by Philadelphia on Sunday.

John Harbaugh, a longtime assistant who has led Baltimore to the AFC title game in his first season as head coach, had endorsed Frazier for the Broncos job via the Denver Post. Asked who Denver should select on Saturday, Harbaugh said, "Hire Leslie Frazier. That's my advice."

Harbaugh is familiar with Frazier dating to when both were on the Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff. "He's a tremendous X's-and-O's coach," Harbaugh said after his team's 13-10 victory at Tennessee in an AFC divisional-round playoff game. "Players will respect him. He's a great organizer, a motivator. He's just a real good man."

If Frazier leaves the Vikings, coach Brad Childress will have to hire a defensive coordinator for the third time since taking over in 2006. Mike Tomlin was with the Vikings one year before being hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers as their head coach.

It also sounds like Rex Ryan is now the front runner for the Jets job. Frazier is our most realistic choice as of right now. However, we could still make Spagnuolo a finalist but we will face stiff competition from Detroit. If we don't even make an attempt to interview Spags, this whole search is rigged in my opinion. And that would cause me to absolutely lose it!

thats the thing thats bugging me..we hearing they "interested" in Spags..but what good is stuff like "we go long way back" ?
Billy D needs to set up an interview pronto..otherwise Spags is gonna join somebody else when he might have chose us instead.
seems like we quick to interview no-names but are lax in chasing up those who should be serious contenders..

    Leslie Frazier? Are you joking?

Why don't we just hire Ronald McDonald?

    What's wrong with Leslie Frazier?

If these are the two finalists, then I will be mad. We need to atleast interview the other candidates in order to get a good bunch to choose from.

Devaney, if you care about this team... fire the offensive coordinator!!!!

Spagnuolo, Ryan, Schwartz and Frazier should all be finalist in my opinion. Jim Haslett should not be a finalist, but he apparently is....

Winston Moss should NOT be a finalist - he does not have enough coaching experience. The Green Bay Packers fired their DC and they are not even apparently considering promoting Moss from linebackers coach to DC - that tells me a lot right there.

Maybe Frazier could win one single Playoff game as a coordinator before handing him a Head Coaching job.

Not sure. Guess we'd have to ask Devaney that one after his finalist interview.

    .
Most successful NFL coaches who won one playoff game or less as a coordinator before getting their first head coaching position:

    Joe Gibbs (1)
    Bill Parcells (1)
    Bill Cowher (1)
    Bill Walsh (0)
    Jim Mora (0)
    Dick Vermeil (0)
    Marty Schottenheimer (0)
    John Madden (0)*
    Marv Levy (0)*

*Never became a coordinator before obtaining a head coaching job.

Honestly, what is your fascination with playoff wins? That gives no indication that a coordinator is ready or qualified to be a great head coach, as evidenced by this list. Hell, Larry Marmie has a playoff win, maybe he should be considered instead of Frazier! At least that's what it sounds like you're getting at.

Head coaching is about Leadership. The 2 best leaders are Spags and Frazier IMO.
Spags took a 25th ranked defense to 7th with no elite players besides the DE position and Linebacker position. He lost his 2 best defensive players Uminyura and Strahan and his defense went from 7th to 5th not to mention Justin Tuck only had 1 career sack before him. He is one of the best at managing player personal. His players match his intensity, and excell in his Jim Johnson blitzing scheme. Right now I'm giving him a slight edge over Frazier

Thank you. Someone who realizes it isn't always about results when you're finding a new head coach. Linehan was a good X's and O's guy. Problem? He wasn't a good leader. This is why we heard that he had lost the locker room and the players weren't playing for him anymore. We need a guy who is going to come in and portray leadership and gain the respect of every player on the roster. The two guys you already listed will have no problem in doing that.

Re: Frazier scheduled to meet with the Rams

The NFL has two mind sets when int comes to HC, Old and proven verses New and inovative.

If you want old and proven, D. Green, formally of AZ, is availible I am told...perhaps W. Phillips of Dallas might become available

Still Linehan was New and inovative. And who can argue that he found new and inovative ways of crash and burn

Problem is, weeding out the has beens and the want-a-be. Stats are a number that can help, at least get you an interview. But so much that makes a leader can't be measured by crunching numbers. Looking for a HC is also like looking for a perfect marriage. Ideally, a new HC can walk in, like with Atlanta, and turn loosers into winners because he can use whats available and maximize the teams potentual.

Frazier, I think offers the Rams its best chance to turn it around. Numbers asside, its his ability to impart toughness and discipline that is part of his leadership qualifications that gives him the nod for the Rams new HC
