Morning Session
- It would be hard to call the move of training camp to St. Louis anything short of a success at this point. The attendance continues to grow and I’d be stunned if this weekend we didn’t see some extremely high head counts. Today, there were 1,516 people at the morning workout. The players are happy, the coaches are happy and, it seems, the fans are happy.
- The morning practices are going to get a reputation for being quite spirited. They are fun to watch in that the team is in full pads and the energy level is higher. At the end of practice Friday, the second and third strings went head to head in full contact drills. It’s nice to see some live hitting.
- Poor Dusty McGrorty. The guy works super hard and is great to have around, but he won’t be getting the “Handle with care” yellow jersey that fellow running backs
Steven Jackson and Marshall Faulk wear anytime soon. To his credit, McGrorty takes the hits well and bounces back quickly.
- Early favorite for defensive breakout star? How about defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy. The man they call Bear is beaming with confidence and it is carrying over to the field. Kennedy continued to be almost unblockable in the morning workout and is clearly in better shape than he has been at any point in his young NFL career. If he can take what he was doing at the end of last season and bring it to this team, he will be the dominant defensive force in the middle this team is looking for.
- Terry Fair is kind of a forgotten man in the mix at defensive back, but he certainly has the potential to make an impact as a returner. He showed good burst in the kickoff return drills and made a couple of nice plays defensively in the passing drills.
- Blaine Saipaia is doing more than just keeping
Alex Barron’s spot warm for him until he arrives. Saipaia is as tough as they come and can really deliver a blow on first contact. He might make a heck of a guard someday, but in the meantime, he can be a solid right tackle.
