Full Post Article on Isaac Now

Here is the full article in the post dispatch on the release of Isaac Bruce

Unable to reach agreement on a contract extension with wide receiver Isaac Bruce, the Rams released the four-time Pro Bowler on Sunday night.

"We do want Isaac to remain a Ram," Rams president of football operations Jay Zygmunt said. "We're still hopeful that we can get something done in the near future."

But there are no guarantees. Bruce is now free to negotiate and sign with any team, no strings attached. And one potential suitor that immediately comes to mind is the Detroit Lions, where former Rams coach Mike Martz is now offensive coordinator.

In the final analysis, the Rams were unwilling to carry Bruce's 2006 salary cap figure of $10.04 million under his old contract. Under terms of that deal, Bruce was scheduled to make $8.1 million this season, including a $1.5 million roster bonus due on the first day of the league year - that is, the start of the free agency and trading period. That day got pushed back from midnight Thursday to midnight Sunday because of the labor negotiations between the NFL and the NFL Players Association.

The delay gave Rams management and Bruce's agent, Jimmy Sexton, three more days to work on a deal. They talked numerous times over the weekend. The Rams offered several proposals beyond the three-year, $9 million extension that Bruce originally rejected.

But apparently, every proposal called for Bruce to make $5 million this season, or $3.1 million less than under the old deal. That proved to be too severe of a pay cut to Bruce's liking, particularly for a team that is about $10 million under the cap.

So shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, the Rams informed Sexton they were releasing Bruce. The $8.1 million he was due to make this season is erased from the books, giving the Rams more than $18 million in cap space.

"We've looked at this situation the last several days and we weren't able to come to an agreement," Sexton said. "We'll keep working on it in the next several days and see if we can work something out."

In many ways, Bruce has been the face of the franchise since the Rams moved to St. Louis from Southern California in 1995. He is the team's career leader in receptions (813), reception yards (12,278) and receiving TDs (77). He was the franchise's first Pro Bowl player in St. Louis, and caught the game-winning TD pass against Tennessee in Super Bowl XXXIV.

Bruce's reception yardage total ranks 12th in NFL history, and his reception total ranks 14th in league history. But last season, he missed five games with a dislocated toe and finished with just 36 catches for 525 yards. Those were both low figures for Bruce since the 1998 season, when he played in only five contests because of hamstring problems.

"There's no player that we respect more than Isaac, both for his performance on the field and for his work in the community," Zygmunt said. "We just kind of ran out of time."

Bruce's release leaves the Rams with only two of their top five receivers from a year ago currently under contract: Torry Holt and Dane Looker. However, the Rams have made tender offers to restricted free agents Kevin Curtis and Shaun McDonald. Curtis and McDonald can receive offers from other teams, but the Rams can match any outside offers.

The Rams NEED to take Bruce off of the cut list and keep negotiating until Wed 9PM. They owe him that at least. If a deal can't be struck then it's a sad day.

Maybe now that Bruce knows he will be cut, he might accept so he can stay.

There's no reason the Rams and Bruce can't negotiate even if he's cut. It frees the money from the books, gives the Rams a boatload of room, and maybe they work out a new deal for Bruce in the next couple of days. Both his agent and Zygmunt are saying the right things about continuing negotiations.

Wish I were as optimistic as you Nick. Maybe someway it will work out,but I can't help but believe that there are teams out there that will pay Ike more than we are apparently willing too.

Don't bury the idea until it's dead. Until Bruce signs elsewhere, then there's still a chance the Rams can bring him back. It wouldn't be the first time a team has cut a player only to resign him.

Right, but I would rather see them sign him this week without releasing him period.

Re: Full Post Article on Isaac Now

Does anyone know what Bruce is asking for? I can't imagine he and his agent are realistically expecting $10 million from the Rams or anyone else this year. I think(if I'm reading it right) $5 million a year for three years is a pretty generous offer by the Rams at this point.

As far as Curtis getting his shot, I'm not sure about the Rams being that small at both wr spots as such a good thing. If they get a big guy (TE?) that's actually a threat in the passing game then it might work out well, but hasn't Linehan always had a big wr to go to(Minnesota/Miami)? Actually, now that I think about it, Bruce doesn't exactly embody the definition of a big wr. He's 6'0" but he doesn't exactly fight for the ball or always come down with the catch. Maybe Curtis should get his shot. He's 5'11", younger and faster. Nah, the Rams need to keep them both. Neither have proven they can stay healthy for 16 games (yet or anymore). Bruce needs to be more realistic if the Rams are actually proposing reasonable offers. Which they seem to be.

i woke up this morning and saw the article on espn, it says he was placed on the waiver wire...does that still mean he could come back? this is bull**** and im ashamed of the rams, this is not how you repay a guy who has been so loyal and so great to a team, the only team he has ever played for

Re: Full Post Article on Isaac Now

I hate to say it, but this is not new to the NFL. A lot of good receivers leave towards the end of their careers because their team will not make them a decent offer. Look at Henry Ellard for instance. Perhaps there is too much pride and ego built into a WR for them to be under paid by a team.

Personally the receiver that I would not mind losing is McDonald. He drops a few and he does not always seem competitive.

Isaac is a competitive player and he always steps it up in difficult games. He is a performer and a great route runner. He has a few good year left in him and I will miss him if they don't work the deal with him

Re: Full Post Article on Isaac Now

I sure hope he comes back, but I think this was probably the right move under the circumstances. There's just no way to validate writing off a tenth of your cap space on one aging player. Free up $8 million then find a way to bring him back under more reasonable conditions.

Re: Full Post Article on Isaac Now

Hearing on ESPN radio this morning that Bruce was cut sucked the wind right outta me. Ike has always been my favorite Ram and everything sounded optimistic about them getting a deal done. This article gives me a little breath back, at least they're still hoping to work a deal out. The difference between both sides can't be too far apart, Bruce himself said he was "easy" when it comes to restructuring his contract and with what they're offering he can't expect too much more.

I have to agree. Unfortunately, this is the league under a salary cap. Players at the tail end of their careers, that earn high salaries, are often left out in the cold. I don't like it either. But, it is what it is.

I hope that both sides can find a mutually beneficial solution. I'm as tough on the FO (tougher probably) as anyone else. However, this is a door that swings both ways. Ike knows that this team has major defensive needs. In order to be competitive next season we'll need to be active in the FA market as well as drafting well. If Ike wants to finish out his great career on a winning squad, he needs to be willing to take a bit of a cut (ala Faulk).

That being said, The Rams need to do their part by going after FAs that can actually make an impact. Claiborne was not the answer last year. I watched him in Minnesota previously; he wasn't great there either. I personally think it will take a couple of seasons to rebuild our defense. I'd start with the line. Everything begins up front. A great d-line makes everybody else on the d look better. I want big, strong, smelly, nasty guys in the middle of that line, and quick, hard hitting guys on the ends. Stop the run up the middle. Put lots of pressure on opposing QBs. That's a great place to start.
