Let me ask you this... if, after 4 years, Smith is a Pro Bowl player, Laurinaitis is a full-time starter, Fletcher is a nickel back, Scott is a rotational DT getting 15-20 snaps per game, and the remaining three choices are gone, would you call this a successful draft?

If your answer is "no," you just don't get how much of an inexact science the draft is.
Fletcher can be a lot more than just a nickel back in four years. I think that he will see snaps a nickel back THIS year, and should be the starter opposite Bartell by year 3 at least. The league is going towards bigger corners with long lanky arms like Asomugha. I've said that numerous times before. Look at the top 2 corners this year, Jenkins is lanky and Davis is HUGE. This guy is going to be a way better corner in 2 years than Hill, Wade, and King. They are going to e the one's competing for nickel back snaps in 2 years. I have real high hopes for all 5 of our top picks. If Scott can add a little weight and develop a mean streak under spags, then all 5 of them can be starting by year 3. Laurinaitis and smith will easily start this year. Calm down diehard99, i think it will be a GREAT draft.

For those questioning the pass rush, REMEMBER ...

It's not just about personnel - schemes are just as important ...

    You actually asked this question?

Without even considering the players, I have three names for you.

    Shawgmunt
    Linehan
    Hasslet

We'll have to wait until we have some real coaches, with good schemes, before we can assess the players.

well we certently didnt hurt ourselfs.
our pass rush will be better with a healthy carriker, long and ryan are getting more experience and little can still perfrom well when healthy.
our defense will be better beacuse we have a more solid LB and a much better secondary then last year. Look our major weakness was our inablity to get get pressure on the qb with spags that will all change, look for a major improvment next year.

Guys, we did not get into this mess overnight and we are not going to get out of it in one draft. It is not possible. Jason Smith vs. Adam Goldberg? HUGE upgrade. Of course we helped ourselves in this draft. No, we didnt solve all of our problems.

Re: Have we really helped ourselves ?

The new regime has 1 draft under their belt and we're ready to bury them?
Out with the old and in with the new is part of the culture changing that our team needs. We have "talent" on our team and just added some more. Is it enough? Enough to do what? Win 3 games? 6 games? Make the playoffs?
We can only answer that as individuals as we all probably have different expectations and tolerence levels.

What remains to be seen (as least from my perspective) is if Spags is the right man for the job? He's putting "his" team with "his" type of players together for the long run.

Do I like what has been going on with our team? Of course I do. We were (3-13) and followed that up with (2-14). Changes needed to be made...lots of them. To Devaney and Spags credit they have had the gumption to make changes whether they're popular changes or not.

It's hard to be patient but that's what we have to endure like it or not.

    Diehard,

What exactly were you expecting? Tell us the players in rounds 3-4 that are going to begin the '09 season as starters. Tell us the players in rounds 5-7 that we should have drafted that are not crapshoots. It's easy to criticize, but unless you outline a feasible alternative to what we actually did your criticism isn't going to carry much weight.

    MLB: James Laurinaitis
    SS: James Butler

New Role Players Acquired This Offseason

    QB (#2): Kyle Boller
    WR: Laurent Robinson
    TE: Billy Bajema
    DT: Dorrell Scott
    CB: Brad Fletcher

Add to that list the fact that the Rams retained there most important FAs (Atogwe, Bartell, Incognito and Adeyanju), and I'd say the Front Office is doing a very good job.
Diehard, i know you still feel doubts because of the previous years, the "just wait til the season starts" statements, the off-season hype..So i sort of understand where your coming from...but NOT REALLY. Look at the list above, we have NOT SEEN that much change, POSiTiVE change at that to be able to sigh and ask whats so different.
At least then, you tell me then what we should be doing..

Furthermore, where were you expecting the cap dollars to come from in free agency to address every single need? We have made great progress. Thats all you can ask for at this point.
