Here are the Rams’ starters — for starters ..
05.20.2010 2:00 pm
By Bill Coats
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
On the second days of OTAs, here’s how the St. Louis Rams lined up their No. 1 units:
OFFENSE
QB: A.J. Feeley
RB: Kenneth Darby
FB: Mike Karney
C: Jason Brown
RG: Adam Goldberg
RT: Phil Trautwein
LG: John Greco
LT: Jason Smith
TE: Billy Bajema
WR: alternating between Laurent Robinson, Brandon Gibson, Danny Amendola and Donnie Avery.
DEFENSE
DE: Chris Long and James Hall
DT: Clifton Ryan and Fred Robbins
MLB: James Laurinaitis
SLB: Na’il Diggs
WLB: Bobby Carpenter
S: James Butler and Craig Dahl
CB: Ron Bartell and Justin King
Of course, a number of prospective starters are missing, including RB Steven Jackson, G Jacob Bell, TE Daniel Fells and S Oshiomogho Atogwe. Also, bear in mind that coach Steve Spagnuolo won’t automatically anoint a rookie as a stater. But that’s how they’re aligned at this point.
Notes & quotes:
*Spagnuolo said he’s been pleased with Carpenter, acquired in a trade for Alex Barron. “He’s more athletic than I thought,” Spagnuolo said. “He did some things today as the nickel (weakside) linebacker that I thought stood out.”
*Long-snapper Chris Massey had clean-up surgery on his knee a week ago and won’t be on the field until training camp.
*Rookie TE Fendi Onobun made an acrobatic catch on a crossing pattern. Also, second-year WR Brooks Foster leaped high for a tough grab on the sideline.
*Several players hustled to the airport after practice. The team will reassemble Monday when OTAs resume.
All for now…

I am assuming Mardy Gilyard will grab the 5th spot on the roster so who is the lucky guy who grabs #6?

Re: Here are the Rams’ starters — for starters ..
That's the beauty of having a WR corp filled with 2s and 3s..........there ain't much difference between #1 and #6. It could be ANYBODY!
Avery, Gibson, Amendola, Robinson, Gilyard, Foster, Burton
Any of them could be on this roster.
Any of them could be gone from this roster."Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

Avery and Robinson at least aren't going anywhere unless they suffer a serious injury. If you told me Gibson and Gilyard aren't going to make the roster i wouldn't believe it, again, barring any serious injuries (even then they'd just be put on injured reserve). Foster, Amendola, Burton, and the rest are pretty much fighting for their lives right now. I don't see Amendola or Burton making the roster at this point.

Re: Here are the Rams’ starters — for starters ..
What makes you think Avery, Gibson, Gilyard and Robinson get a pass?
Do you really think the talent spectrum is that wide? I certainly don't.
Make no mistake, Avery/Robinson/Gibson/Gilyard are no more safe than any other receiver currently on the roster. There's no #1 (talent-wise) on this roster.
Bottomline: Nobody in this WR corp should feel comfortable with their roster spot; and nobody in this WR corp should feel a roster spot is beyond reach."Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

Re: Here are the Rams’ starters — for starters ..
I'd love to see your talent quantifier that tells you who has ability and talent who doesn't, seriously it could come in handy..
Avery's spot as the number 1 or 2 on this roster isn't safe but do you honestly believe that he won't make the receiving squad, which was what i was saying. Avery can be a great deep threat which can allow our possession guys get passes underneath. It'd take McRae turning into Moss and Curry turning out to be Chris Carter for Avery to get pushed down so far he's without a job. I'm just going by what I saw last season in saying that Gibson, Avery, and Robinson aren't going anywhere. Gilyard was just drafted in the fourth round, he's not going anywhere. That leaves the rest of the guys fighting for their life here.
Noone's positional place is set in stone (or clay for that matter) but lets be realistic, those guys, especially Avery, aren't going anywhere, barring a significant injury.

Re: Here are the Rams’ starters — for starters ..
Agreed. Very few (if any) players do not have the luxury to take their spot for granted. That being said, the WR spots are definitely up for grabs. No pun intended, but hell it sounds good! lol..
Personally I'd like to see, in no particular order, Robinson-Avery-Burton-Gilyard-Amendola and Foster in the mix..

Re: Here are the Rams’ starters — for starters ..
Well, if they don't make the team, a front office that probably is on thinnish ice has effectively admitted that it screwed up by expending multiple valuable draft picks or other resources on acquiring these guys. These are Team Devaney's Boys, and Team Devaney isn't letting them go right now.

Re: Here are the Rams’ starters — for starters ..
I'm pretty sure Gibson, Gilyard and especially Robinson have more of an "advantage" so to say.
Why?
Because they are all products of Devaney's ideas, be it from trade or draft.
Avery by speed alone is ahead of all the other WR's, but there is no guarantee he will be one of our top 2 WRs.
Do I think he will be on the roster? Yes.
The only question marks I have are Amendola, Foster, Burton, and all the other common receivers we've picked up.

Re: Here are the Rams’ starters — for starters ..
everyone saying we don't have a # 1 WR, look at Robinsons stats the first 2 1/2 games... if he kept playing like that he would've had right around 1,000 yards. he's our #1.
