Home > Blog Zone > Rams Report > Around The Horns .. Picture this: A Rams Par

    By Jim Thomas
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. _ So what about those pictures, or lack thereof, on the walls of Rams Park? Marshall Faulk’s comments earlier in the week, bemoaning the fact that photos of Rams greats have been taken down, struck a nerve with Rams Nation. While making the rounds Friday at the Super Bowl media center, coach Steve Spagnuolo and general manager Billy Devaney were only too happy to explain the interior decorating decision.

“We’ve got pictures of Faulk all through the building,” Devaney said. “There’s a ton of pictures of Kurt Warner, Isaac Bruce. Torry Holt. Ricky Proehl, and deservedly so. We’ve got the Hall of Fame players. I’d love to give people a dadgum tour of the building to show them how we recognize it.”

There’s just none in the team auditorium, where the walls remain bare one season into Spagnuolo’s tenure.

“When we first got there, there were a lot of pictures,” Spagnuolo said. “And in my opinion, a lot of pictures up there were just individual pictures. And you know the gist of what we do: Team First. So we changed it a little bit. We took ‘em all down at the beginning, and then put ‘em back up in the hallways _ all team-oriented pictures.

“Now up in the second floor, there’s still a lot of pictures of Kurt and Marshall and all kinds of former Rams.”

(That’s an area of the building where the players normally don’t venture.)

“But in the auditorium, in the actual room where we meet with the players, we have not re-put pictures up yet,” Spagnuolo said. “We’re still kind of contemplating what we’re going to do. I didn’t think (the lack of pictures) had a big effect on anything either way.

“The mindset is that (the team auditorium) was a work area. . . .We’re just trying to interject nothing but team. Everything in that building was going to be a vision toward: It wasn’t about one person, not about one guy, not about one area. But just completely team. But I have a tremendous amount of respect for the history, the tradition of the Rams. The players that have come before. What they did. Certainly 10 years ago, the anniversary (of the Super Bowl championship team).”

is this a big deal ? I don't know but I do think the head coach should be more worried about the teams play than who whose picture is on the wall, maybe if those guys had to look at those everyday day they would realize what the expectations are or should be for this team.

Group psychology is part of the coaches job, and interior decoration falls under the purview of group psychology.

And I'm going to beat this point into the ground-our players should not look up to members of Division Rivals or other opponents.

One day you too can be like Kurt Warner, get beaten to half-death behind our line, and eventually move on to another team for recovery!
One day you too can be like Isaac Bruce, putting in more than a decade of reasonably loyal service to the team, only to have management renege on multiple handshake deals with you and eventually cut you, allowing you to sign with a division rival!

I don't know about you, but that doesn't strike me as messages the Rams should be sending to young players.

My guess is Spags spent 10 minutes on this decision.

He walks in looks around and says

"Let's replace these with pictures that reinforce team accomplishments."

and then he probably never thought about it again until fans, former players and the media decided to make a big deal out of it.

If I was spags I would be using your quote to them... "I don't know shouldn't you be more worred about the teams play than whose picture is on the wall?"

At first, I was disappointed that Spags allegedly removed pictures honoring past Rams greats from the halls of the facility. Such an act would have been very disrespectful, in my opinion- you simply don't shun an acknowledgement of those that came before you and positively distinguished themselves. After reading this clarification, however, I am 100% behind what he's done. Acknowledging the past is one thing; living in it is another. And I think Spags "team first' mantra in their immediate work area is the way to go.

To those who think this is "no big deal", I would remind you that your work environment- regardless of your profession- is important. While the "picture removal" is not important in the grand scheme of things, it nonetheless is an issue that resonated with many fans, and rightly so. The Youngbloods, the Joneses, the Olsens, the faulks, etc. should NEVER be forgotten!!

interior decoration is part of his group psychology ? serious ? if thats the case then it's easier to understand the 1-15 record,as for Warner and Bruce and correct if I'm wrong but I think they both went to 2 super bowls with the Rams and If I remember right they won the first one and they are both going to the hall of fame and also two of the best off the field players you will ever meet, yea I see your point ,wouldn't want to be like those guys.

It's not "they did good things" I'm worried about. It's "the team did bad things to them" that I'm worried about. I'd very much rather that message not stare the players in the face every day.

Additionally, we have a young roster. They don't know of Warner in the context of "guy who went to two Super Bowls in this town" as much as "guy who lights us the frack up twice a year". Do we want to honor that? No.

If thats what they see when they look at the pictures then you have a point,I just am not sure they see bad and rather they see what type of career they could have if they put in the work and have the drive these guys had,I don't know I can't speak for them just thinking of what I would think if it were me.

This has to be the most inane issue I've ever seen sportswriters and fans focus on. What's next? A debate whether Rams Park should serve Coke or Pepsi products?

To sum all this up in one phrase...So the hell what?

he takes pictures off the wall so they can build their own destiny......so what?

combine needs to get here soon before they start pondering why Spags doesn't have green eyes instead of blue..
