How can any Rams fan want Linehan back in 2008?
I find myself having a more difficult time comprehending why any Rams fan would want Scott Linehan to return next year. I won't bother listing all the reasons why it seems obvious to me that he's not the man to lead us to glory, as I have done so many times, and always receive the same excuses in response.
But now, after the sideline tirade of the Rams' most soft spoken superstar ever, Torry Holt, how can you support Linehan? This MUST be regarded as the mere tip of an iceberg of discontent in the Rams' locker room, and the fact that it was exposed by Holt shows that its not just the team malcontents.
I've been pounding this drum for a while, and I'll keep doing it.
I'm not a football coach, or a GM, or an owner of an NFL franchise. I never even played High School ball. But I have eyes, ears and a brain, and it is obvious to me that Linehan does not belong.
I hope the fans who have supported him are finally seeing it too.
I hope more that the Rams Front Office sees it.

Agreed, 100%. Avenger, your posts are always spot on about Linehan and although you've always proved great points I wanted to have faith nonetheless. But a class act like Holt DOES NOT just do what he did last night for no reason, there is clearly something wrong here. Linehan might be a decent OC at best for a different team but he does not belong/fit in with the talent he has with the St.Louis Rams offense.

The evidence of Linehan's ignorance is everywhere, it's up to the fans to see it. Why waste another year with this clown when next year his supporters will be saying to themselves "Oh, I guess he does suck, I suppose I should have seen it."
Think about this, if we fired Linehan after the season would he be at the top of another team's list for OC? Would he be on any list at all? Would he even get another job in the NFL? I don't think so but yet he'll be our HC for the next year.

Re: How can any Rams fan want Linehan back in 2008?
from my understanding is this , when the rams are running out of time with no timeouts before the bulger pick at halftime , the passes were going to bennett and mcmichael , and none were being thrown to holt , the pro-bowler . he was pissed that he wasn't getting the chance to help move the team , and then after the pick , linehan was giggleing and laughing with bulger about something , and holt got upset that the coach is having a great time while the rams are trying to come from behind and score some points to stay in a game that everyone had themalready loosing .

Re: How can any Rams fan want Linehan back in 2008?
For me it simple, even with a healthy team, I think Linehan is to conservative a play caller. I have seen nothing from him that shows he has the killer instinct, to win in the NFL. It’s not easy to win week in and week out; you are not going to back into more wins then losses.
Again in last nights game we should have been the team to fake a punt for a first, not the team playing to keep their playoff hopes alive. Third down and long draw play? Ok if you have no trust in your O line, why play a recently concussed QB. .
If he comes back he will win more games for sure with a healthy team, but he’s not a great coach or even a good coach. With Marty and Bill Cowher out of football, why do we want Linehan. Someone tell me why? What have you seen or know about Linehan that makes you think he can get us back on top?
Tell me so I can have some hope:\

TEN FREAKING GAMES (this season) in which this team has scored THREE OR FEWER POINTS in the SECOND HALF!!! Stevie Wonder could see that this dolt is being OUT-COACHED week in and week out!!

BROTHERS AND SISTERS - CAN I GET AN AMEN!
FIRE THAT P.O.S. NOW!
I believe I finally bailed on wunderkind after the Seattle game. I like to think I'm fairly ratonal, open - minded, and blah, blah, blah, etc. And in my (and others') defense, we had the injuries and and and...
Anyway, I'm still waiting for an answer to AV's question, and guess what?
I'm going to be waiting a LONG time.

That was a questionable call, but I can see the pros and cons of it. The cons are you need 12 yards for a first down, do you really think you're going to get it on the ground? I don't think the probabilities are on your side there. But on the other hand, Jackson had been tearing up on the ground prior, which included a big gain on a delayed handoff on the previous drive. So in a passing situation, you're hoping that you can catch the defense napping and have Jackson spring it for a first down. Rather than gain the 12 yards needed though, Jackson gained seven. So the anticipation of having room to run was correct, but they just didn't have enough room to get to the first down.
As for wanting Linehan back, I still believe that asking him to win, succeed, and look good doing it under these circumstances is a very tough task. People hate to hear it, but injuries have simply crippled us this year. And furthermore, I think Linehan gets blamed for a number of things that should fall on someone else's shoulders. That, however, doesn't mean Linehan gets a free pass. I've criticized him for various things before this game and I have additional criticisms aimed his way after this game. While I don't think any of them are significant enough to warrant firing him, I do think it would be irresponsible and likely damaging to a franchise to keep a coach that the players either do not respect or have faith in. Torry Holt's outburst on the sideline is the best and clearest example of player discontent with Scott Linehan, and we all know it would have to take Torry a lot for him to erupt in that manner.
So I guess my point is this - I'm not convinced the coaching mistakes Linehan has made as a second-year head coach are grievous enough to cost him his job, but if he's truly lost this team and no longer has the faith or support of even our top players, then a new direction is likely needed.

I agree Nick. Based on coaching, I still think Linehan deserves a third year and feel he could turn things around with a healthy team, that is provided he still has the support and respect of his players. I don't know what to make of Holt's blow up, as I didn't with Bulger's eye roll (which quickly went away), but if Linehan has truely alienated guys like Holt, Bruce, Jackson and Bulger, I don't think it would be in the Rams best interest to bring him back.
That said, frustration in the heat of the moment doesn't necessarily translate to a major problem. We'll have to wait and see.

Re: How can any Rams fan want Linehan back in 2008?
i have been a linehan supporter based on the injuries. I am now done for the reasons stated by nick above.
At the end of the day, you cant fire the players. It doesnt really matter whether linehan can or cant coach, before if he doesnt have the confidence and trust of the players this is NOT a viable situation and it must be changed.
