Re: How our team shapes up contract-wise

So assuming Bulger signs, we're only looking at Chillar, Atogwe and McCollum for next years UFAs. Not bad.

I think theres a good chance McCollum will be retiring, seeing as he'll be 38 at this time next year.

The following is my opinion on the ones with two years or less.

These two won't be cheap but we need to start working on locking them up long term. Jackson's price tag will go up with another big season.

I don't see these guys as either a big loss or with much higher contract demands when there contracts come up. I would let there contracts expire and see about resigning the ones of interest then.

These are four guys that may start this year and we should stongly consider signing some of them to new contracts while the price is low. I am not saying they need to sign all of them. Just the ones they feel have the best future with them.

Re: How our team shapes up contract-wise

Romberg wasn't listed with the OL. He'll be a restricted free agent in the spring.

And, provided he plays at a respectable level, i'll bet a highly touted one.

Why are you so sure? Because he had three or four decent games last year? Let's see how he does this year before we tag him with the "great" label.

Re: How our team shapes up contract-wise

We need to re-sign Bulger before he hits the FA market. Yahoo reported that the deal was close a week ago. We also need to re-sign OJ Atogwe.

Re: How our team shapes up contract-wise

Atogwe will be the big one we'll want to keep next off-season. Bulger should have a nice long contract soon. Chillar garnered no interest as a RFA this off-season, and his lack of impressive numbers will probably keep him somewhat off the radar of other teams. If we want him, we should be able to retain his services. It seems like it isn't too hard to tender restricted free agents such that no one else will go for them as very few RFAs have changed teams in the last couple years.

The fact that Incognito, Setterstrom, Terrell, and Romberg could hit free agency in the same year could potentially be a problem in 2009.

Re: How our team shapes up contract-wise

Obviously signing Bulger long-term is the main thing to do contract-wise. But I also think serious thought should be given to offer Atogwe a contract soon, I'd expect him to continue his improvement this year and be a lot more expensive when all's said and done in '07. It's a gamble yes, but one that I think should at least be considered.
