How receiver Tavon Austin will change the Rams' offense

    By Greg Cosell

On how receiver Tavon Austin will change the Rams' offense: "As soon as they made that pick, and I was doing radio that night at the draft, I said that the Rams [will go with a more wide-open offense." Keep in mind what the Rams' personnel is. They have two tight ends who can move in Jared Cook and Lance Kendricks. They've got Tavon Austin. They've got Chris Givens, who a lot of people have forgotten about, but that kid can run. Everyone's talked about Chip Kelly and the speed offense, and taking nothing away from him, but in Sam Bradford's Heisman year, Oklahoma scored 60-plus points five or six weeks in a row, and I think they averaged 82 plays a game. Bradford's played in that, and they don't have what you'd call a feature back. So to me, everything about their skill positions signifies hurry-up, spread, tempo, speed to get guys in space."

I really hope to see the hurry-up used on a regular basis this year. It's where Bradford is most effective, and with all our weapons, defenses aren't going to know what hit them. Relentless is the word that comes to mind. How can you not be wildly excited about the possibilities?

Cosell is brilliant and one of the most bright minds in the game. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a base offense which consists of 3 WR's, 1 TE, 1 RB (like the Broncos run).

His very presents on the field changes everything for the simple fact he is a threat, a dangerous one. Opposing defenses at their peril will pay dearly if left unaccounted for or under estimated. Having Givins, Cook, TA on the field helps each player out in that a defense can't focus on just one threat--further getting the ball to your "stars" and "playmakers" is one thing but often or not the attention they draw often leaves open your "no names" to make plays and keep the sticks moving

Sooner or later during a regular season game, Austin will make a highlight reel play. More likely than not, part of the "highlight" will make one or more defensive players look foolish. As the season rolls on, Tavon will get in players' heads via his astounding speed and agility - he won't need to trash talk. Austin may be diminutive in stature, but he is very capable of fomenting fear in opposing defenses. If Quick can begin to perform on the field in a manner that the Rams envisioned when they drafted him, we will be a very difficult offense to defend. If not, enter Stedman Bailey. Sted is quite possibly the most polished rookie route runner the Rams have drafted in quite a while.

It will be hard to gang up on Cookie, Quick/Bailey, Austin and Givens at the same time. Particularly if we run plenty of no huddle. Should be really fun to watch this year. As Sam B. mentioned in a recent article, "last year we had to grind out touchdowns" - this year, our offense projects quick strike abilities in addition to a bit of grinding when we need it.
