[Howard]: Little would be okay with the franchise tag

    From Howard Balzer...

After Pisa signed, I talked with Leonard informally about his situation. He's hoping to stay, would prefer to sign a long-term deal, but said he wouldn't have much of a problem being franchised because the tender will be pretty high. This past year, for defensive ends, it was $8.3 million.
While not the preferred option because of the high cap charge, it's nice to know that franchise tagging Little, should it come to that, wouldn't create much if any ill will.

Just like I always say, a cool 8 mil helps to ease a lot of situations. Considering his age though, I would say that this is the last year he would be happy with this. He'll be 33 at the end of next year.

I have no idea where we would be without leonard. I am his biggest fan.

I am also a huge fan of Little and would love to see him in a Ram uniform next year, but I don't think of all of the years that he has played for the Rams he has never become a leader in the locker room and we need players that can solidify our team off so that we might play better on the field.:l

If letting Little go so that we can get a vocal leader for this defense I would be for it. Pang mentioned something about this in his article last week that some changes on defense need to be made and it might result in the unthinkable being the next logical action to take.

As far as i am concerned, vocal leadership is secondary to on the field performance. There is no basis for letting leonard go given that the tag is available to us. There would be some basis for signing him and then trading him if we could get top value to facilitate a rebuilding process, but not just letting him walk. We will wind up overpaying in the market for guys that arent as productive.

Chaveous is a "leader" on the field. So what?

The key is skills. I think leadership is relevant and i dont mean to minimize that value, but leonard little is not really replaceable production wise regardless of whether he ever opens his mouth to say a word.

Grant wistrom was a vocal leader on defense. A great all around guy. Many wanted to keep him. Look at his production for the money seattle paid him. Basically a bust. I am glad we let him go. Fletcher was another story of course, but not because of his mouth, more because of his 12o tackles per year that we lost and never replaced.

Re: [Howard]: Little would be okay with the franchise tag

I understand your point, but look at across the league the top notch defenses rally around each other. Denver, Baltimore the Buccaners of the 90's these teams had top producing players yes, but they also had leaders off the field to rally behind and generate enthusiasm. Ray Lewis case in point even being out the last two games he is still pacing the sidelines energizing his fellow teammates, that's something that a young rising star like Pisa can't hope to shoulder in his early years in the league. While our new coach gets aclimated to his new team we need guys that are 'Ray Lewis' types to inspire energetic play.

i'm glad he won't be pissed about being tagged because i think thats how it is going to end up,look how long it took us to get pace signed long term, but on the other hand we got Pisa signed quickly,so maybe things are changing in the front office.just pay Little and move on to the next guy.

I'm glad to see he's ok with it...it shows he wants to remain a Ram...let's hope that willingness remains and can turn into contract before year's end.

DE is to big a need to let the one established one that the Rams have go. Little is priority number 1 as far as I can see.

Question what is Bulger's contract like.
