Huddle Report on Montavious Stanley

This could be great pickup....

Montavious Stanley DT Louisville
Strengths

Montavious has good size and strength for his position. He uses his hands well to shed his man and has good lateral quickness and strength to cover his gap responsibilities. Montavious has marked quickness off the snap and does have some pass rushing skills. He can be used in any kind of front 3/4 as a DT or 4/3 as a nose guard.

Needs to Improve

Montavious just needs more experience at the next level. He really is an excellent DT at the college level.

Bottom Line

I would take Montavious over Marshmallow Man (Gabe Watson) any day. When you see a quality DE making a lot of plays in a game, most of the time there is a DT that is controlling the middle of the line. If not, all anybody has to do to nullify the impact of the quality DE is to run away from him. This happens a lot of times to quality DE’s in their senior years. It is not happening to Montavious, so the first thing I do is look inside and BAM! There he is right in front of your eyes -- all 6’2’ 321lbs for the world to see, a dominating DT. I don’t have a clue where this kid will go in the draft. I am always amazed that there aren’t more of them that are first rounders. This kid has first round, Pro Bowl talent. He is as good as any of the first round picks in the last few years, so it will be interesting to see where he will be rated and in what round he is taken. If your team picks him, you’re going to get a hell of a player.

Re: Huddle Report on Montavious Stanley

That's quite a bit more complimentary that I would be grading the guy. Stanley does have potential and did play well in college, but first round Pro Bowl talent?

Re: Huddle Report on Montavious Stanley

Here is a small snippet on M. Stanley from a Dallas writers blog. Seems like they were trying to get him to be a 3-4 nose. Hopefully it was a case of being in the wrong scheme for his talents.

From Dallas Morning New's Matt Mosley's Cowboys blog:

"Fourth-round pick Skyler Green's fumble last night might have sealed his fate. Montavious Stanley has some ability, but he's behind curve on learning this 3-4 scheme. The Greg Ellis experiment has gotten in the way of Bobby Carpenter starting, but it doesn't mean he can't help the team. Pat Watkins is pushing for a starting job at free safety, and Pat McQuistan has found favor with Bill Parcells"

2nd blog entry on M.Stanley and interesting on Skyler who is on Dallas's practice squad now:

"For the second time in Bill Parcells' tenure, two draft picks failed to make the team in Skyler Green (fourth) and Montavious Stanley (sixth). Green didn't show the same burst he had at LSU during the preseason, and Stanley came on late but lost out to Thomas Johnson as the backup nose tackle.

Both are eligible for the practice squad, but I think Green might be scooped up because teams will look at their draft reports on him and could take a chance. Stanley has the better chance to be on the practice squad."

Good point, Ramhard. That is exactly what happened to LaRoi Glover last year when he played for Dallas. If Stanley is more of a 4-3 type of DT, he might fit our scheme much better. Time will tell.

WHAT SAY YE?
