Re: I am going out on a limb here....
I'll grant that in '06 Bennett's numbers would suffer with a run-first/rookie QB but I wanted to see what some of the other similar team's #1 WR's did that year for comparison. There were six teams that passed 400+ times but less than 450.
ATL:
Michael Jenkins 39 436 7 td (Vick)
JAX:
Reggie Williams 52 616 4 td (Leftwich/Garrard)
SF:
Arnez Battle 59 686 3 td (Smith)
TEN:
Drew Bennett 46 737 3 td (Young)
KC:
Eddie Kennison 53 860 5 td (Green/Huard)
BUF:
Lee Evans 82 1,292 8 td (Losman)
Honorable Mention(454 team pass attempts)
DEN:
Javon Walker 69 1,084 8 td (Plummer)
To me, it seems clear that Bennett, under very similar circumstances doesn't compare to Lee Evans and to a lesser extent Walker. I think he's probably on par with what Kennison did since he was working with a far less talented QB. I don't really see any excuse for him putting up Battle/Williams numbers.
Paying Bennett the type of money that the Rams did for, at best, a #2 receiver still seems like a bad move. Heck, they could have had Kennison this year if they wanted that kind of production. Are Battle and Williams even in the NFL anymore?
