And if those two situations were even close to being the same, then you'd have a good point with the implication you're making.

Not sure which particular onsides kick you are referring to (the Jet game a few years back?), but the issue here is context.

The Rams were playing on the road against a team with a very good offense. The Rams' defense is not good at protecting a lead. So... if you get a chance to put points on the board and take a 6-0 lead, you take it.

Alternatively, if you're going to try to get a TD, the best chance would be to line up in the regular offense and try to get 3 yards. If the Rams had gone for it in the regular offense and failed, I would not have had such a strong reaction. The fake FG was just weak.

Being so early in the game, it doesn't seem like the gamble is worth it in that kind of situation.

Bulger said it best when he called the play 'demoralizing.'

He's referring to the onside kick attempted by the Rams against the Chargers in the pre-season.

    LOL

The point was one coaches decision to gamble vs. anothers.

Either way it is still a gamble with a trick play.

In order to "gamble," you must risk losing something. In preseason, there's nothing to lose, so, consequently, there's not gamble.

I can't believe I have to explain this to you.

And my point is if you don't factor in the situation, then your comparison is worthless.

You are right it is worthless. And so is the contention that Martz would be more heavily criticized for taking a gamble than would be Vitt.

The point works for one side in a sarcastic manner, but not the other....

Since I had an inkling, before the game that Vitt would take a gamble at some point, I don't have the luxury of whining. Things could be worse. I could be whining for the former head coach that took many a gamble, but could never do enough wrong in the eyes of some.
