I have to be honest and say that Avery has...
... disappointed me the first two games of the season. He tries to do too much ( which is ok with me as long as you pick your spots ) and puts our team in a bad position. Dont get me wrong I am not bashing on the guy or calling him a bust in any way, I am just saying that he should be more selective when he tries to push for extra yards and he HAS to take care of the ball. In my opinion if Avery doesnt fubmle in both games, we wouldve been in a completely different positions. I am not saying we wouldve won, I am just saying in a better position to win.
Any thoughts?

I'm with ya, even though I beleive we win and lose as a team, Avery has hurt us a bit the first couple game. Donnie is a good kid, but I don't know if he has the skills yet to be our #1.
Perhaps if he is given a lesser role in the offense, he can make some big plays like last year.

Re: I have to be honest and say that Avery has...
I think the hype and high expectations everyone put on him for this year has gotten to his head and is making him crack under pressure. He played okay last year, but I dont think he played well enough to be handed the #1 WR job this year without question. Maybe he got a little arrogant or maybe he's just rusty. I just know that I havent cringed so many times because of a single player in a looooooong time...

There is no "hype" surrounding Donnie Avery. Rams fans expect him to produce like any other 2nd round player- not an unreasonable expectation- and contribute to this team's turnaround. So far this season, he's laid a big fat egg and cost us dearly today by making a mistake that absolutely cannot happen given the field position and time in the game. He's got to start getting it together and play to his capabilities.

Re: I have to be honest and say that Avery has...
I hear you but I do think that our coaches slotted him as the number one receiver too early this year. I was just saying that he didnt do well enough last year for the job to be handed to him the way it was this year, second round pick or not. I think he came into this year overconfident and if he were more hungry to WIN the spot he might not be making so many mistakes.

You guys are a lot nicer than me, because I thought he absolutley stunk today. I am not gonna sugar coat it or try to make excuses for him. He played bad in Seattle and played bad today. His blocking from behind on steven Jacksons big run was not necessay. Now he is showing he cant hold on to the ball. I'm not saying we lost because of him, but he sure contributed to it. So far he has been all liabilty and no asset this year.

Well he is still young and this is part of his learning curve but he better watch out because if Spags and Shurmur decide it is inconsistency and not a learning curve he will looking at 3rd or 4th string.
Since we are re-building Avery is going to get more chances but he better take advantage of them. He just needs to remember the fundamentals
I believe in Avery but he needs to do more when getting open and catching the ball.

He better get his act together. Laurent Robinson is winning a lot of hearts right now, including mine

Re: I have to be honest and say that Avery has...
I don't mind if Laurent Robinson wins the #1 job at all. I think he's playing really hard and deserves the chance to lead this wide receiver corps.
Avery does need to step up his game. He's a smart kid, so I think he will bounce back. He only played one preseason game, so I expect some rust to be there.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
Devaney, if you care about this team... fire the offensive coordinator!!!!

Re: I have to be honest and say that Avery has...
Avery has a lot of potential and a good WR but I admit the crucial mistakes cannot happen. I just hope he takes it as a learning experience and in future games minimizes those type of huge mistakes. He's a young player and things happen even thing you think shouldn't so we can only hope that he's learned from them.

Re: I have to be honest and say that Avery has...
I'm with Moose and BarronWade. Avery's young, and he's going to make mistakes. He's one of the most experienced receivers we have and that's a detriment to the whole of the corps, that they're going to have to learn on the job. A vet like Holt wouldn't have made that fumble today. But we don't have a vet like Holt anymore, we have Robinson and Avery. They're going to make mistakes until they polish up, but they have the skills. They will get better, and they will learn. I have faith that in a couple years, we'll have one of the better receiving tandems in the league.
Robinson's putting up, and should be the number one guy right now. Avery is showing some sophomore mistakes but they need to be worked through, not hidden or punished. He'll never get better without reps.
Besides, we're 0-2, and down two games in the division race. Even I can say we're probably not going to the playoffs this year. Might as well get our future the reps they need.

Re: I have to be honest and say that Avery has...
Just goes to show you.....sometimes preseason DOES matter.
I don't care how good of shape one has kept himself in during the offseason, if these guys don't get in some contact before the regular season things like this happen. He'll come around, but I sure wish he could have been around when the games did NOT count so he'd have this worked out for games that DO count."Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

Letting Holt walk looks even worse now
