I hope we don't defer the opening kickoff
So far this strategy to defer the opening kickoff has not paid off. In Chicago we fell behind three zip and they had the ball twice before we got a possession, due to the block in the back. Last Sunday we gave up an 80 yard drive and where behind again. I hope if we win the toss we take the ball. We need to get some points early and get this offense cranked up. I can see doing it on the road more then at home with the fans not making noise on your possessions.

Re: I hope we don't defer the opening kickoff
I actually like the idea of getting the ball at the start of the 3rd quarter.
Last Sunday, the Rams had the ball last in 2nd and then got it back in the 3rd. Both drives resulted in FGs, extending the lead from 10-7 to 16-7.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: I hope we don't defer the opening kickoff
Given that our defense is our strength, I tend to agree with Av. We want to give them the potential for more drives when our defense will be fresh(1st half), while we want to try to maximize our opportunities after we can get some information about their defense.
While I agree that we need to score points early to help out our defense, I also think we need to limit the times we have to defend in the 2nd half.I believe!

Re: I hope we don't defer the opening kickoff
I agree. I used to hate if we did it in the past, but over the years i have grown to prefer it. We haven't done to well on defense on first drives the last couple games, but i love opening the 2nd half with getting the ball. And it always sucks if the opponent scores at the end of the half and then gets the ball back right away. I rather do that like you pointed out how we did last week. If we had kept it we might never of gotten those points.

Re: I hope we don't defer the opening kickoff
I think the Rams should defer if given the option every time regardless if we are at home or on the road.
Having the ball to start the second half after all the half time adjustments have been made is always an advantage, IMO.

I will say this our defense seems to get better as the game goes on... We have been playing from behind in every game, I hope we can get an early lead Thursday.

Re: I hope we don't defer the opening kickoff
this is the importance of home field. get the crowd in it early and often. i think its important for our D to be on the field 1st for every home game or until our O starts to find some consistency. if we get a turnover on downs at the least without giving up a score (due to a couple of cards miscues from the D and the noise) it'll get even louder on their next possession. we can only hope that it works that way. kick it to them, THEN PUNCH THEM IN THE MOUTH!!!

Re: I hope we don't defer the opening kickoff
I'm with the majority here, put our defense out there first, force a punt, give our o a short field to work with, vs trying to drive 80 yards(for a td) or 30 yards(to lock an load legatron). Couple that with getting the ball after half and having the ability to "double dip" on possessions, I would defer every time, regardless of our current lack of success.

Re: I hope we don't defer the opening kickoff
I love receiving in the 3rd. This is because our defense is 100000x better than our offense. Most of the time we usually stop them completely or hold them to only 3 points, which is a win. Gain some momentum, and go on from there.
