Re: If a long term deal with Atogwe can't be reached, I would...
Let's not forget the possibility of no football in 2010...
If he gets that big contract he could be 31 and banged up by the time he plays for us again after this year...
@Molar_Pistol: Dahl is "horrible"? really? Not great in coverage but is about a sure a tackler at safety as you can ask for. Atogwe is a liability in the secondary once a runner gets to the second level and actually isn't that great in coverage, he is just very opportunistic.
On Atogwe, Devaney reiiterrated today that they are adamant about getting a deal done with Atogwe and that both he and Atogwe's people are interested in getting a deal done. Basically, Atogwe not signing his tender should not have been news to anyone and that we should not expect a deal before June 1st.Last edited by Bralidore(RAMMODE); -05-11-2010 at 04:15 PM.

2011 is when the lockout/strike would happen. There will be an NFL season this season, as the CBA is still in effect.
Pay him. It's monopoly money anyway at this point, and I'd rather we not toss even more positional eggs into the already overloaded "with good coaching, maybe they can be good" basket.

dahl is horrible as a starting free safety, yes. sure he'd help against the run a little bit but there's a lot more to the position than that, the back end of our defense in the passing game would have a major weakness and it's not like we need to create more problems for our team. if it comes down to starting dahl or paying atogwe for one season the answer is simple if the money is there.

If it's a one year deal I don't see the harm whether we pay him $2 million or $10 million.
We are well under a cap that we don't even have.
There is no question in my mind that a healthy Atogwe makes us a better team next year. Even if he is not at a 100% he is still better than most average safeties.

Can't we franchise tag him?

On one hand, we're probably not going to be jockeying for a playoff spot this offseason and if Atogwe performs well, he's going to be expected to be paid the same next year.
On the other hand, there's no cap, we're not going to be spending that kind of money on anyone else any time soon, and it's only for one year anyway. If he can help us win games, keep him here for a year.
Pay the man.
