If the Rams are being so smart with their approach...
... why haven't they re-signed Brandon Chillar.
Here's a guy who was a steady and productive player and knows the defense. I don't fault the Rams for refraining from breaking the bank to retain him, but given the fact that he's now left Arizona and Green Bay without a contract, wouldn't it seem that he could be brought back without a major bidding war?
If he is not retained, the Rams are relying on an unproven second year player and a 30+ player to fill the SLB spot (not to mention the need for extral ILBs if they are going to run 3-4 sets). There are some good prospects in the draft, but are the Rams really going to spend a 2nd or 3rd round pick on a LB?
Seems to me that the Rams should be on the phone with Chillar's agent making a reasonable offer to retain him. That would be the smart thing to do.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: If the Rams are being so smart with their approach...
is an odd one...not only do they not seem to be pushing to re-sign him,but they dont seem to be chasing any other OLb`s either!
to me,altho he`s unlikely to ever make a pop-bowl appearance,he seems to have the biggest upside of any of our OLb`s....he has been relatively injury free,is young, has a good work ethic and is improving every year.....out of all the other Olb`s we have (treating Chillar as ours until signed elsewhere) they all lack at least one of them qualities that B.C has.

Re: If the Rams are being so smart with their approach...
What you are saying is right and it makes a lot of sense... but it makes me wonder if St. Louis, Arizona and Green Bay know something we don't?

Re: If the Rams are being so smart with their approach...
Always very possible, bunctious, though Green Bay's looking for depth, Arizona's not exactly the best team, and they're trying to fill 3-4 linebacker slots, which Chillar may not be big enough for them, and so it would make sense that Chillar would leave both places, either because he wants to start(GB) or because they didn't want him(AZ). I very much agree with Av, and want to know why we either haven't given a standing offer to him, or why we haven't upped it ever so slightly to get him back.

Re: If the Rams are being so smart with their approach...
Maybe Chillar has simply over-valued himself. Who's to say AZ and GB didn't offer contracts, but just less than Chillar was willing to sign for?

I wouldn't mind seeing Chillar back with the Rams, but I always thought that Draft was the better line backer.

DON'T look now , but the rams wouldn't mind CHILLAR back , but at a very low price just for the fact that the rams ALREADY replaced CHILLAR , and ya didn't even see it . here are 2 words we'll be hearing alot . QUINTEN CULBERSON . tada , just like magic . and i know alot will say he is just a ST player or something but he is the real deal folks .
YES , i would love a monster MLB to come from the draft . you know that kinda crazy 6-3' 255 lb terror that puts the fear of god in ya. the rams have not had a real differance maker since their undersizes devil LONDON FLECHER was here .

Yeah I keep looking to see that we have signed him, he has to be one of the best FA left on the market. I think Draft will be good, I just hope Tino can hold up.

HUb is right that we don't know what BC's asking price is, but have the Rams even made him an offer?

Re: If the Rams are being so smart with their approach...
Its hard to tell at this stage
However, the Rams probably gave him and his agent a starting offer, and he said he wanted to try free agency to get a taste of his worth. But there hasnt been too much interest in him to a point where his price will have been pushed up too much
The biggest question is whether the Rams actually want him back

Re: If the Rams are being so smart with their approach...
As I said, I don't know if they have or have not. All I know is that there have been no reports of the Rams making an offer to him.
I posted a question on this on Jeff Gordon's chat for this afternoon. We'll see if he has some insight.

Re: If the Rams are being so smart with their approach...
I think that the Rams presume the LB area is where they can "skimp" this season. It seems every team has an area where they may not invest so heavily in due to salary cap purposes and this seems to point to the LB's. Jury is still out on Culberson, even though he did play well last year especially on ST's. Draft is also there but he's getting up there in football years.
