If the Rams need to clear more cap space, who's on the chopping block?

As effective the Rams have been in FA with their limited budget, there might still be a need to make another move or two, such as re-signing Mark Clayton or adding a veteran CB. To do so, the Rams will need to clear some cap space.

Which veteran should be most worried about this possibility?

Its gotta be James Butler. I feel bad for him but we have so many guys at the safety position.

    FS - Dahl, Nelson, Stewart
    SS - Mikell, Hines

Or it could be King I suppose with all the young ascending players at the position.

I maybe jumping to conclusion's, but maybe Spags having a go at Jason Smith, has a lot to do over his play , and the extra large contract he signed as a rookie. Im betting Spags will keep on Smith until he has Smiths contract re-constructed to a more affordable number. It is going to handicap the Rams in the future, so I hope it can be done one day.?

James Butler and Avery are both history with a bit of luck. Avery is going to need to stay healthy the minute he is back to full health, otherwise he is gone.

    GROUND DOG,

What incident are you referring to here? This is the first I've heard of Spags "having a go" at Jason Smith.

    Please advise...

I went with James Butler over Nail Diggs. Both are at a position where there is now some good depth. I think Butler is more likely to get cut since he's not going to start this year whereas Diggs could hold on to hs starting gig for another year.

I think he means Jason Smith needs to take the paycut and receive a salary of a solid starting right tackle and not a top 10 draft pick before the rookie wage scale was intact. Might we also consider Sam Bradford taking a paycut also? Just maybe $5-10mil so we can free up some capspace for the future.

EDIT: Matthew Stafford restructured his contract by turning $9mil base salary into a bonus so if we want to save up some space, we can just turn $5-10mil of Bradford's base salary into a bonus as well. I'm not so hot on doing it for Smith though seeing that he's getting paid LT money for a starting RT.

Re: If the Rams need to clear more cap space, who's on the chopping block?

I believe that I read somewhere that Sam has a cap charge this year of somewhere in the range of 21 million? I'm assuming that ties in mostly with his signing bonus of almost $18M due this year, but shouldn't that get pro-rated out?

From the small details I saw of his contract, it looked to be a relatively small guaranteed base salary, huge signing bonus due this year, and then incentive money tied to achieving them last year(unknown amount). I'd easily say that he's the big charge on this year so if there was a way to lower Sam's charge, we should be doing it. The problem comes in that his base salary is low, at least in his pre-incentive contract, so I'm not sure how we could.

Smith and Long are also possibilities, where they might have bigger bases from which we could bonus out some of their money and/or extend Long.
    I believe!

Re: If the Rams need to clear more cap space, who's on the chopping block?

I'm surprised so many voted for Butler. His renegotiated contract means, if the posted 101espn numbers are accurate, a 1.223 cap charge for this year. That's pretty cheap for a vet who knows the Spags system well. If he stays injury-free through to the final cuts, I think he stays.

Avery is the one big ticket item on that list, imo. Diggs is also a possibility. You could even throw in C. Dahl as a viable "Someone Else" option. There is serious competition for both starter & primary depth who would also be cheaper.

I think there might be a collection of lesser but still familiar names that get circular-filed in the end to create some wriggle-room for in-season emergencies and bring Clayton back but if these are my choices, I'll go with Avery. Dunno his number$$ but they have to be pretty high for a top 'o the 2nd pick in his 4th (?) year.

Also, I'd say that any of the vets who won't start, such as maybe Diggs, Butler and Dahl as well as others, are possible cap casualties, because if they are on the week 1 roster, their salaries are guaranteed.
    I believe!

I read today on 101 ESPN, Spags is getting on his case a bit, challenging him to improve.?

Voted Diggs but i'm not sure they will have to cut anyone of significance.

Smith isn't going anywhere. Remember, the question here is who might be cut. While there may come a day that Smith will be asked to restructure his deal, there's no way he'll be cut.

I highly doubt Averys going anywhere at any point in this year unless he gets injured. Hes the best receiver we have to do what Mcdaniels loves to do, stretch the field.

Theres going to be no room for Gibson. Id rather see Alexander or Gilyard back.

Mark Clayton is supposed to be trying out over the Cheatriots today. May not have to cut anyone but if we do it's probably Butler.
