I agree, that is what I would do.

I asked this very question of Howard Balzer a couple of weeks ago. Bulger counts for $8.5M against the cap in 2009 but the Rams would take a cap hit of $11 million in they released or traded him. His cap numbers for the next few years after that are $10.5 million (2010), $11 million (2011-2012), $13.5 million (2013). How much of a cap hit he'd account for if cut during any of those years would obviously depend on whether or not the NFL still has a cap then, which is unknown at this point.
