    Immediate Changes on Defense

It looks like Dave Wannstedt is stepping down in Miami. I say we either fire Marmie and bring him in now (no chance) or we name this guy Defensive Coordinator during the offseason.

If sMartz were to realize it's not about ego but about success, he would contact Wannstedt immediately. Unfortunately I'm afraid he would feel threatened by Wannstedt's stature on the sideline. It would become easier for people to call for sMartz' replacement if someone were on the sideline that people could cozy up to because he knows the system and personnel.

Wannstedt knows he is going to get fired anyway and wants to take his best shot at the Univ. Of Florida job. Go Gators.

    Re: Immediate Changes on Defense

I'm all for Wanny as DC. I say (as I believe Nick suggested) bring him in as a defensive consultant now and jettison Marmie after the season. But before we get too far into this, we need to recognize that IF Wannstedt does come on board, that will indicate that the team is prepared to undergo some reconstruction. The personnel we have now will have to do some shuffling to play a Wannstedt defense. This will be good news for Trev Faulk who may actually fit best in a Wannstedt MLB system. Hargrove & D-Lew will fit nicely as well. However, he expects more physicality from his CBs than what we have and better pass coverage from his SS. Arch, Butler & Fisher will have some re-learning in their immediate future or we will see trades being made. Either way, Wannstedt would be great for the long-term, but I think there would be growing pains in the immediate future.

HUbison, you make some good points. As for pain in the immediate future, i dont know how much worse it can actually get for us on defense.

    Sad but true.

Until they pause and think about what Wanny did as head coach in Miami, and then those thoughts would probably pass.

To be fair, prior to this season Wannstedt's record with Miami was only 2 games behind Martz's record with St. Louis. And in my personal opinion, Wannstedt did so with much less talent available to him. Not a knock on Martz, I'm just trying to be fair.

Here in So.Fla., most people think that Wannstedt is a nice guy but a lousy coach who ran a talented Miami team into the ground.

His defenses seem to be solid. Can that be attributed to him or has he just had good DC's himself?

I'm not sure it took a great coach to put good defenses on the field with players like Jason Taylor, Tim Bowens, Darryl Gardner (before his injury), Adawale Ogunleye, Zach Thomas, Junior Seau, Sam Madison, Patrick Surtain and Brock Marion - most of whom were players Wannstedt inheritted from the Jimmy Johnson days.

Wanny may not be the best IDEA!!!!! I think the depth chart is a little low right now. Talent makes the "D". Besides he'll get a HC job offer anyway! :tough:

In 11 years as a HC, his defense ranked lower than 13th only once. As the Cowboys DC under Jimmy Johnson, he took the 20th ranked defense made them a top 10 defense in one year and the #1 ranked defense within 3 years. I'd say he has a better track record than our current doormat.

Works for me! Obviously, we'd still need an infusion of talented players, but hey, ya gotta start somewhere!

    Go Rams!!!
