    Incognito's penalties: real or myth

I asked this question in another thread and yet to have find an answer so I open it to everyone. We've all heard the stories of Incognito's "drive-killing" penalities. And how he is a loose cannon that gets more yellow flags than the Prime Minister of Lemonville. But are just applying the hype of his college days, OR does he really get a lot of yellow flags? We all know about the Arizona game this year after coming back from his ankle sprain.....4 flags, 2 of which were unnecessary roughness. But other than that single game.....

So I ask you, anyone............how many penalties has Incognito received? And is it significantly more than the rest of the league?

Has he played enough for it to be significantly relevant?

It would seem so. First, if the stats are out there, then a per game number could be generated to compare with any other lineman out there, regardless of games played. Second, if he has not yet played enough to be significant, why are some ready to get rid of him due to too many penalties?

I'm still trying to find a place that holds those stats. I only found one article which chronicles the league's biggest offenders since 05' (I believe it was), but Cogs wasn't in there because he hasn't played enough. Robert Gallery was #1 and our boy Barren (which his mind is during snap counts apparently) was #2.

Maybe he hasn't played enough...........or maybe he's not nearly as penalized as we tend to believe.

Okay, here are Incognito's career numbers. Below that are Claude Terrell's career numbers and I don't think there are many that argue Terrell wasn't a complete disaster...

Okay, that didn't work, so here are the links to both-

    Cogs-

    STLtoday.com - Sports - Stats, Inc.

    Terrell-

    STLtoday.com - Sports - Stats, Inc.

I realize that Cogs has started more games, but to me, the numbers look eerily similiar- so I'm not sure why everyone was so adament that we cut Terrell, but seem to be so high on Incognito. THey're both headcases and have had behavioral issues throughout their lives.

3.5 sacks allowed in 20 games, that to me is a good stat.

first of all Terrell is a big, fat, lazy bum,Incognito plays like an animal,he needs to keep his temper in check but to me there is no comparision,I take Cogs 10 out of 10 times.

They both had the same number or penalties and Terrell gave up one more sack.

    So, 4.5 sacks in 20 games isn't?

thats a tough stat for interior lineman,in some cases i'm sure it's a judgement call by the stat guy on who gave up the sack.

Re: Incognito's penalties: real or myth

Maybe I just look at this a little bit different. Remember Riggs from Lethal Weapon (the guy played by Mel Gibson)? He used his craziness to put the criminals off-guard. I think Incognito can do the same. A 6'3", 330 pound, tat-covered O-lineman who is a little bigger than a lot of defensive linemen may not scare an opposing defense, but I bet a 6'3", 330 pound tat-covered escapee from a hospital for the criminally insane would sure as heck keep a DT wondering what he got himself into...

Re: Incognito's penalties: real or myth

So from the links moloch has provided (kudos on the find, moloch), we now can see that...

    Cogs --- 20 starts, 3 URs, 3 FSs, 7 Holds, 3.5 sacks
    Terrell --- 13 starts, 0 URs, 8 FSs, 2 Holds, 4.5 sacks

And let's remember, it wasn't anything on the field that got Terrell canned, but off the field. How about some others over the past two years....

    All-Pro Brian Waters --- 7 sacks
    Eric Steinbach - 7 FSs, 6.75 sacks
    Logan Mankins - 6 FSs, 2.5 sacks
    Steve Hutchinson - 7 sacks
    Alan Faneca - 6 FSs, 12 sacks
    Shawn Andrews - 3 FSs, 3 Holds, 6 sacks
    Larry Allen - 10.25 sacks

And here's some more good news....

Jacob Bell - 1 UR, 3 FSs, 2 Holds, 3 sacks (Me likey)

While I admit, these numbers would show that Cogs must lower his holding a bit, I must ask......why do we give Cogs such a hard time?
