Re: It's official: The Rams are picking 14th in the 2011 NFL Draft

Hey guys, there are other threads to whine about firing the coaches in, this one is about what position we should look at drafting with the 14th overall. That doesn't need to take over every thread. I vote we move back on to the subject Nick posted.

Pick between the best DE or OLB available. WR sure is a need, but we need veteran help I think more than rookie help. If there is a shutdown corner available at 14 though, I'd go for that.

If I had to pick, I'd say OLB is the biggest need on defense. Hall can't last forever, but I hope we can get one more year out of him.

Not a fan of first round DTs after our previous problems with DTs in the first, but Spags seems to know his d-linemen pretty well, and got a lot out of them this year. He might be pretty decent at snagging a good DT, so I'd look at that too.

    What do you reckon, Nick?
I would lean WR as well, and the value should be there @ pick 14 for either Jones or Blackmon. A veteran free agent receiver would help as well, so we'll have to keep an eye on who is available. That'd free the Rams to look in other directions, at which point help for the DL or an outside linebacker would make sense to me. Really, there are multiple directions this team could go.

you sure 14th? I'm counting the standings and we are 15th from the bottom of the barrel. One pick draft position no big deal, but I'm just saying. now it's time to play scout.

There are 13 teams with worse records than the Rams. There is only one other 7-9 team (Miami), and their strength of schedule is tougher than ours. So we get pick 14.

We will rally around a 1st round wide receiver, and we will play good football...

As Teke put it, "after tonight... the reflex response is receiver."

Nonetheless, I think we have a decent group of promising WRs for 2011 in Amendola, Clayton, Avery, and DX (yes, DX [sure, he looked horrible today a couple of times but offense cohesiveness is still in process, IMO]). Gibson? Robinson? ...I'm really very interested how the Rams will address the WR corps.

So maybe that stud OLB that Teke also mentioned might be a better remedy.

100% 1st round WR. No questions asked.

DX doesn't deserve a knee jerk reaction, he had a bad game, plain and simple. Hell he choked to be quite honest.

But he's a rookie who didn't even play the full season. An offseason with the team with do wonders for the guy. We're really bad around here with knee jerk reactions and we seem to have mood swings at the drop of a hat.

We make one bad play and its fire everyone, we make a good one and the same person is getting praise. Perspective is needed.

However, that being said, this team needs an entire offseason to wallow in this loss tonite. Because it was overall a pathetic game that was quite frankly embarrassing as a fan and I damn sure embarrassing as a player.

Robinson and Gibson will be fighting for a position in the 53-man roster in the preseason. As for the rest of the WR corps, they'll consist of the 1st round WR we draft, Avery, Clayton, Alexander while Amendola and Gilyard will be in the slot. Sure Gilyard is as sure of hell a disappointment but he has the rookie ticket to be given a 2nd chance and also due to that Amendola can't do all the returns himself possibly.

Jones/blackmon or a hard nosed guard! Like a Claude Terrell without the criminal record.

Re: It's official: The Rams are picking 14th in the 2011 NFL Draft

I'm very torn on this, unlike everyone else. Our offense needs help....lots of it. On the other hand, the defense could be one of the top ten units in the league with one or two impact players (assuming OJ returns). I wanted us to draft Suh last year for just that reason -- the defense is the closest part of the team to being dominating. And it seems like our draft position is primed for getting a LB, CB, or S and hitting (doesn't it always seem like the best defensive rookie comes around this position and is a LB or something?).

So my answer will be a cop out ... it depends on free agency. If the Rams can address one side of the ball pretty well in free agency, then I'd go the other direction. And this will depend on the contract situation and the available talent pool. I suppose my preference would be to sign an interior lineman and find a good WR in FA, but that's pie-in-the-sky thinking.
