    Re: It's Time To Rebuild.

I think that the secondary held up well up until the time we needed to utilize Lenny Walls. As others have said until we can create some pressure on the QB NO corner is going to be able to shutdown receivers. My six year old son could throw for 400 yards with the amount of pressure we've put on QBs this season. Shore up that front 4 and you will then be able to fairly judge the strength of your secondary. Right now I think Hill, Bartell and Wade are our corners for the future. Also remember corner is one of the most complicated positions on defense to play.

The corner stones of any defense are your DT and middle linebacker. They are worth their wieght in Gold if they can contain the run and put pressure on the QB.

Contain the run by means of limiting a RB to his options on where to go. That is where your Linebackers and SS can come up and finish him off. Its pretty simple in thoery, but difficult to put into practice. Where you have a good rush defense is where you only need 3 defenders to stop it. That leaves open so many options and Blitz packages since you don't have to commit more then 3 defenders in rush defense.

Pressure on the QB from your DTs is priceless. Makes your Defensive Ends job so much easier, since TE, RB, FB have to commit to blocking them rather then the DE, or Linebackers.

Tampa 2 works well just because it takes so fewer players to put pressure on QB and contain the run allowing for a lot of other schemes/situation defensive plays. Shutdown CBs are great, but a good front is better.

Even the Ravens picked on our corners. They just have to throw the ball up and they know if's fifty/fifty chance our DB's will interfere or get lost.

So, in response to this Baltimore game - It's time to rebuild, starting with the headcoach. Alllllll the way down to talent and scheme. EVERYTHING.

We need a coach that will, and can run the scheme the front office expects from this team. Then the assistant coaches and talent to run it. Total rebuilding effort.

As I said last year, our defensive backs are terrible (or at the best, nothing special) and we've got serious sign-age to do there. We need stronger, veteran db's. Guys like a Fred Smoot, Shawn Springs, Anthony Newman.

Oh and if we have such bad corners, why must we always leave them on islands?

Because we don't have enough of a pass rush from the front 4 to create pressure without the blitz.
