Jackson Closing In On Dickerson Record

Jackson closing in on Dickerson record

    Friday, October 15, 2010

Steven Jackson knows he's very close to Eric Dickerson's franchise rushing record, but needed a little help Thursday on just how close.

"Do you know? What it is?" Jackson asked reporters.

In his seventh season with the Rams, Jackson needs 141 yards rushing to surpass Dickerson's career record. Dickerson, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, rushed for 7,245 yards in just five seasons with the Rams. Jackson is at 7,105 — and counting.

"We're getting close, but I would love to break the record with a win," Jackson said.

Jackson logged his first 100-yard game of the season last week, gaining 114 yards on 25 carries against Detroit. Coach Steve Spagnuolo later said that he erred in leaving Jackson in until the bitter end of a 44-6 blowout loss, what with Jackson still nursing a groin muscle injury.

But after a Thursday practice in which Jackson ran and moved as well as he has since suffering the injury Sept. 26 against Washington, the two-time Pro Bowler announced himself fit and healthy.

"It's 100 percent," Jackson said. "I feel great. All is well with the groin."

Jackson said he is no longer wearing what he jokingly called his "groin contraption" — a harness that prevented him for over-striding and thus aggravating the injury. In fact, Jackson said he didn't wear it Sunday against the Lions, when he made some jump cuts that he couldn't do Oct. 3 against Seattle.

It will be tough to break Dickerson's record in one afternoon. Jackson has 24 career 100-yard rushing games, but has topped 141 yards only eight times — most recently on Nov. 1, 2009 against Detroit when he rushed for 149 yards.

And this week's opponent, visiting San Diego, ranks seventh in the NFL in rushing defense.

"Their front seven is led by (Shaun) Phillips," Jackson said, referring to the Chargers' pass-rushing linebacker. "They're fast, a team that rallies to the football pretty well in the running game."

Jackson's rushing numbers have been very consistent this season. He has gotten 19 to 25 carries — good for from 70 to 114 yards— in four of the Rams' five games. The only exception was Washington, when he had 10 carries for 58 yards before leaving with the groin injury late in the first half. At his current rate of production, Jackson probably passes Dickerson Oct. 24 at Tampa Bay.

"I'd like to break the record as soon as possible, but I think it would be special to do it at home in front of the home crowd," Jackson said.

    Injury updates

Michael Hoomanawanui (ankle) and Billy Bajema (knee), both tight ends, continue to get a lot of work in practice, and both are on target to play Sunday against San Diego. Hoomanawanui hasn't played since the season opener; Bajema hasn't played since Game 2 in Oakland. Both were listed as full participation on the team's official injury report Thursday.

The only players who sat out all of Thursday's practice were linebackers David Vobora (hamstring) and Chris Chamberlain (toe). Chamberlain may be a couple of weeks away from returning.

Left guard Jacob Bell, who suffered concussion-like symptoms against Detroit, was full participation Thursday and is expected to play Sunday. In San Diego, rookie running back Ryan Matthews (ankle) was full participation.

    Chargers game on TV

Thanks again to some corporate help, the Rams are four-for-four on telecasts of home games this season. With KMOV (Channel 4) and Anheuser-Busch agreeing to help buy unsold tickets, Sunday's noon kickoff at the Edward Jones Dome has met NFL sellout requirements. The game will be televised by KMOV.
