I would not think there is any issue between the two. Jackson is a professional and I think he would take the team winning over personal pride.

That said, knowing Jackson's attitude regarding how he wants to carry the load, he may be a bit miffed that Richardson is getting involved as much as he is. That said, if you want all the carries, you need to be injury free!

I've got NO problems with this happening. At the end of the day, its a business, as everyone says. I'm as big a SJ fan as the next guy, but $7 million dollars saved for a RB that is potentially being outplayed by his rookie counterpart? I think by seasons end, DRICH and SJ are splitting carries right down the middle. I'd be very interested in bringing Steven back next year on a much cheaper deal (he may be inclined to take it because time and time again he's said it means so much for him to finish his career here and get into the playoffs again, and we may finally accomplish that) and play the 3rd down back and short yardage specialist role.

I think it's a great move. He turns 30 next summer, and though there are exceptions, that's a magical age for RBs. Especially the big bruising RBs like S-Jax. I hope he spends the rest of his career in St. Louis, but my guess is he goes out looking for a team that will offer him a feature back role.

Because those days of being the Rams feature back are quickly winding down.

Yes he is not as fast as he used to, but you see some of his run in the last quarter yesterday where he just move 4-5 people backwards for several yards? He is still strong and always plays hard!

Watching him play is not like being behind and old lady, it is like looking at a bulldozer crashing through things. Sometimes that can be very efficient making the D line tired and beat up. And I really think it underlines the smash mouth kind of football team we are becoming. Hard hitting defense and SJ39 beating the **** out of the opposing defenses. Personally I like it and hope he stays until he ends his career.

I think it's a great move by the FO. Jackson has only a few years left and he gets to choose where he spends them, I'll be supporting him* wherever he goes.

*although going to the Pats or the Niners would be pushing it

I tend to agree. Jackson has given his body and effort in the worst of times, there would be a part of me that would be disappointed to see him not experience the better times to come in the next few years should he go elsewhere.

Having said that, I guess better to do it this way than to simply release him outright due to a contract issue. Of course, I guess that's still an option if he decides not to void the contract and the Rams don't want to pay his salary. Still, my hope is that he and the team negotiate a deal that is (1) reasonable in terms of price and cap figure while (2) allowing him to retire a Ram.

I don't know how much Jackson likes it, but it seems he's at least tolerating another back taking some of his snaps this season based on how much Richardson has played. He's expressed interest in retiring a Ram, let's hope the two sides can get it done. If they can't, it's a nice showing to Jackson that the team has given him an option to kind of control his own destiny.

I feel the exact same way on the subject. I'm so happy Les Snead and Jeff Fisher realize what SJ has meant to us fans and this organization for over 9 years now. I didn't think they'd care what-so-ever, and only do whats in their best interest. Goes to show how high-classed of a team we have.

I pray SJ returns. We owe it to him. Let the guy fulfill his HOF destiny where he started. Also, let him receive a FAT ring with that same team next year!

This is spot on. I'm not sure of the timing though. Why would we announce this now?

I guess I'm just not understanding the need to put this out there during the year. I hope this does not become a distraction. I can't wait to see what SJ has to say about it.

Re: Jackson free agent next year?

Quoting from a Wagoner article after the game...

JACKSON’S FUTURE: Before the game, news broke that Rams running back Steven Jackson actually had his contract – which had another year on it – reworked before the beginning of the regular season.

The contract alteration allows Jackson to opt out of the final year of his deal in 2013 though he also could opt to stay in St. Louis under the terms of the original deal.

After rushing for 76 yards on 18 carries, Jackson, who has long maintained that he wants to finish his career in St. Louis where it started, said he has not had any sort of change of heart on the matter.

“It’s a part of the business,” Jackson said. “I’ve said that from the beginning that, even in 2004, I wanted to retire here. This organization gave me the opportunity to live out a dream. In 2008 they extended me and at the end of the season we’ll see what happens with me. But something is happening here and I want to be a part of it.

This makes more sense before the beginning of the regular season. It sounded as if they just did this... so this makes sense.

I just hope I can see one of my all time favorite Rams retire as a Ram. Though he is much slower, SJ is still a beast and can still "drive the pile" (love seeing him pushing like 4 guys at once). As long as they can find a way to keep Jack I would be pleased. I hope we can get into the playoffs and make something special happen this year for him (SB would be nice).

kurt Warner, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, Hacksaw Reynolds..... All Rams in my eyes.......All finished elsewhere to end their career. Stuff happens. Nobody should be surprised that this is a possibility for SJ39.

For me, I only wish he could have been on better teams....He deserved that. He will always be a Ram to me and one of the all time greats .....

Quiz: What other great back never played on a good team? If you have more then 1 in mind that is OK but 1 stands out above all.

I have three in mind. Herschel Walker, Gerald Riggs, and O.J. Simpson. I will go with O.J. Simpson.
