James Laurinaitis, Chris Long Rams Extension Talks Started

James Laurinaitis, Chris Long Rams extension talks started

The St. Louis Rams have begun contract extension talks with key components of the team's defensive unit James Laurinaitis and Chris Long, according to the Rams' vice president of football operations and chief operating officer Kevin Demoff.

"We're in the process of starting initial conversations with both players, and I'm optimistic that both will wear the horns for years to come," the executive said during a live chat on the Rams' official website. "We have plenty of cap room in 2013 and the plan is to re-sign both of them."

Demoff noted that for the past several years the team has been clearing cap space to make sure St. Louis would be able to resign their core players.

Last season, Laurinitais collected 142 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions in his third year in the league for the Rams.

Long recorded 37 tackles and 13 sacks with one forced fumble.

Something in my rather sizeable gut tells me we are going to have to overpay or franchise long in order for him to stay. Losing either one would be a huge blow to our team.

Long already makes close to what his market value is. He may try to push it higher, but as it stands right now, he can't demand to be the highest paid DE in the league.

I obviously do not know Chris long personally but I feel confidently he isn't the type of guy who will ask for Julius peppers type of money and demand to be the highest paid player in league for a DE. He seems like he has a little more character.

The fact that Chris Long's agent is Kevin Demoff's dad likely qualifies the Rams for a discount .. Ok - probably not, but I would imagine extending his contract shouldn't pose too big a problem.

These two need to retire as Rams.

It might not come down to just money. C. Long might also wanta play for a team that has a shot at the playoffs...teams like Green Bay, or the Pats would pay threw the teeth for talant and have astablished teams that are in contention--same dollars the Rams are willing to pay. But am keeping my fingers crossed
