James Laurinaitis will not miss part of mini camp

Ohio State Rookies Not Allowed To Attend Minicamps

Posted by Aaron Wilson on May 12, 2009, 7:02 p.m.
The annual scheduling conflict between Ohio State’s late graduation date and the NFL academic rule will keep a few high-profile rookies from attending upcoming minicamp sessions.
The rule that doesn’t allow rookies to attend workouts until after their respective colleges’ graduation ceremony will affect Arizona Cardinals first-round running back Chris “Beanie” Wells and St. Louis Rams second-round linebacker James Laurinaitis, according to Mike Sando of ESPN.com.
It stands to reason that the rule would also affect the schedule of New Orleans Saints first-round defensive back Malcolm Jenkins, another former Buckeyes star.
Ohio State’s graduation is set for June 14, which means that Laurinatis will reportedly miss 14 days of minicamp practices.
Under the rule, which seems antiquated to me considering that most incoming rookies aren’t enrolled in school for the spring semester while preparing for the NFL draft, Wells won’t be able to practice with the Cardinals until he reports to training camp.

UPDATE: Laurinaitis WILL participate in all OTAs.

So an underclassman (Sanchez?) who dropped out of college to play in the NFL can practice with his new team but a grad who hasn't ceremonially flipped the tassel on his mortarboard can't?

    Asinine.

Now that I've looked into this a bit, I don't think the info in the OP can be accurate. Laurinaitis, along with fellow Buckeye Robiskie, graduated early as well, accepting their diplomas at The Winter Commencement in 2008.

In any case, it's a silly rule that only pays mouth service to the idea of "stay in school". The NFL should add "unless you are a superstar athlete who could earn millions".

Isnt he already signed? What would it matter, i mean could they really FORCE him to stay away? These rules get crazier & crazier..

Rams: Graduation rates and draft picks

    May 12, 2009 4:26 PM

    Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando

Now that NFL post-draft camps have passed, league rules prevent rookies from joining their teams until May 15 or until their colleges have held graduation ceremonies, whichever comes later. Those final three words will affect some rookies more than others.

Ohio State holds its graduation June 14, preventing the Rams' second-round choice, James Laurinaitis, potentially affecting his schedule (although Laurinaitis has graduated).

    Earlier: Cardinals report

I'll continue by looking at how the NFL's rookie rule affects the Rams' draft choices, listed below by round. The Rams hold their next camp beginning May 19. Their final camp ends June 17. Training camps generally begin in late July.

    1. Jason Smith, T, Baylor. Graduation May 15.

    2. James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State. Graduation June 14. But he graduated in December.

    3. Bradley Fletcher, CB, Iowa. Graduation May 16.

    4. Darell Scott, DT, Clemson. Graduation May 8.

    5. Brooks Foster, WR, North Carolina. Graduation May 10.

    6. Keith Null, QB, West Texas A&M. Graduation May 9.

    7. Chris Ogbonnaya, RB, Texas. Graduation May 22.

I'm checking on how the NFL policy affects players who have already graduated.

Update: My understanding is that Laurinaitis and Ogbonnaya can report after May 15 because each has already graduated.

It's okay, it's okay. Our man from Laurin will work extra hard, catch-up & then some. "ˇNo hay problema!"

like most NFL rules...its a stupid one...
however,we drafted him with his entire career in mind..not just the first few games.

*hardly thought provoking comment on my part..but i just had to get the monkey off my back and make my 1,000 clanram post..*

Laurinaitis finished his Communications degree early so he could graduate in December and avoid just this situation.

In fact, James will be in St. Louis later this week to begin house shopping before he checks in at Rams Park.

Last night, he visited friends and family at WWE Raw.

Of the other Rams drafted rookies, only Chris Ogbannaya may have to miss OTAs as Texas doesn't hold its graduation ceremony until May 22nd.

Rams OTAs begin on May 19th with the final mini-camp the beginning of June.
JL will be available for all OTAs.
