I don't find it that odd for a few reasons. One, he didn't play well consistently as I mentioned earlier so he didn't get the attention that Quinn and Zac got.

Two, 671 rec yards just isn't that impressive a number in general, especially nowadays in a high volume passing league.

Three, that wasn't even his best season. Cook had 759 rec yards with the Titans.

Putting those three things together seems to have equaled no mention of his record.

Exactly. It's like a guy breaking a franchise record in baseball by 2nd baseman with 12 Hrs. I didn't even know that it didn't equal a career high.

Nice theory. Too bad its wrong.

On December 29, Jim Thomas tweeted:

Jim Thomas‏@jthom129 DecJared Cook finished with 51 catches, most for a Rams tight end since the move to St. Louis in 1995.
So, riddle me this... how is that mark noteworthy, while breaking a team record that goes decades beyond 1995 is not?

From a news standpoint, it should have been mentioned. How that news is regarded by those who read it is up to them. Even if you think Cook had a horrible year, its still newsworthy that he broke a team record.

Some of you guys try WAAAAAAY too hard to criticize players who receive big contracts.

My acknowledgement of Cook's record was entirely quantitative, not qualitative.

Would agree wholeheartedly. With the money comes tremendous expectations- sometimes unrealistic ones-but nonetheless the tradeoff for the opportunity to make big money. Even guys who are productive are not immune. And if that player draws attention to himself by not hustling, taking plays off or underachieving in the eyes of the fans, he will be taken to task.

Cook's record should be acknowledged, but in the grand scheme of things to me it falls kind of in the "ho-hum" category. Not as impressive as Quinn's 19 sacks or even Stacy's 973 rushing yards.

i think it's more because cook was more involved with the passing game, we saw more drops than a usual tight end that's used less

as well as not finishing routes and all that...

just feels like he could have had more imo

but breaking a record is doing something right, but he has a higher ceiling if he refines his game by next fall

For what we paid him for, it is disappointing to see that production. However, if he continues to improve off of his milestone, he'll be easily forgiven.

What you think is wrong, I think are some of the reasons nobody noticed. Sure it should have been mentioned. It wasn't, and I gave my opinion as to why I think it wasn't.

I think it's possible that Jim Thomas didn't mention his yards because they were underwhelming and even he didn't notice and think anything of 671 yards rec. It doesn't jump out at you. I can see how 51 catches for a TE stands out a little more than 671 yards rec.

I have never mentioned his contract, and I'm not criticizing him because of what he's getting paid. I'm criticizing because of what I watched him do (and not do) on the field this season.

When NFL records are broken and we are made aware of it, it's because the particular record is of importance. It's important because the record was a great accomplishment. For instance, Kevin Carters 17 sack season was a great accomplishment in 99, and still is today for whoever in the NFL achieves it. That's why Quinn was lauded for breaking the record. Cook broke average records with average numbers. IMO, that's why no one noticed.

Again, that does not explain why Thomas acknowledged Cook' s reception total, which was NOT a record, but overlooked his yardage, which was.

My post has nothing to do Jim Thomas. It was simply my reply to your initial post/title explaining why I think no one noticed.
