Jeff Fisher responded to Bernie Kosar broadcast

Bernie Kosar was highly critical of Rams' players, coaches during broadcast of the team's first preseason game. Jeff Fisher responded today:

"First off, let me say this," Fisher said. "The Cleveland Browns organization is a first-class organization from top to bottom. And it has been that for years and years and years. I guess I'm a little disappointed. I feel bad for them that they had someone doing the broadcast feel the need to speak that way about players, specifically on our team. And coaches, for that matter. I'm surprised that Bernie has such a lack of respect for players and for this game. To be honest with you, I lost a lot of respect for him. This game is a preseason game. Players are playing hard. It's highly unlikely he knew anything about our football team, but felt the need to make those comments. I didn't think they were justified."

Fisher was then asked specifically what he thought about Kosar's criticism of Rams quarterback Kellen Clemens.

"Again, Bernie's got his issues," Fisher said. "They're well documented. Kellen played well. He played hard. He made plays"

The worst part for me was when he'd call the Rams out for playing something that was obviously a basic scheme just for reps and evaluation, then the Browns would do the same thing and he'd be ok with it since it's just preseason and all.

    I'd rather watch his daughter.

Re: Jeff Fisher responded to Bernie Kosar broadcast

I've been highly critical of the way Kosar handled himself during the broadcast, so when I watched the game again today, I wanted to see if he was really as bad as I originally thought, and he was. His statements were completely over the top, inane, and almost personal, especially the bizarre criticism of Clemons, who I thought played pretty well. He was so unprofessional, it was surreal to listen to.

The way he commented on the Rams, it's almost as if he forgot it was a pre-season game, where we all know things are not routinely run according to the book. The guy is a complete idiot, has a history of erratic behavior, and has no business being in a broadcast booth.

    espn comments kill me...

"what was he supposed to do?"

oh i don't know...not talk sh*t about a bunch of rookies and players that won't make the team

you are a commentator on the GAME not about specific players in terms of bashing and dissing players (like Clemens)

VERY unprofessional...i've listened to many broadcasters, many are horrible...but none like that

Man, Kosar was brutal on Clemens. This guy has no business whatsoever representing the Browns in ANY way. What an embarrassment to the organization.

Didn't have such a stellar qb career himself, did he?

I thought all 3 announcers sucked. Our high school announcers are MUCH better.
If a team won their division seven straight times, that would be a NFL record. Now add on that team did it with seven different QB's in seven straight years, that record is unbeatable. To do that feat, you must of had a great Defense. Jack Youngblood was the captain of that defense.

I think his problems have more to do with alcohol, as evident in this radio interview he did last December. It has to be heard to be believed :

Would be a fitting justice if Clemens in his career makes it to a Super Bowl--then sends Kosar an autographed picture of himself for that Super Bowl.

Re: Jeff Fisher responded to Bernie Kosar broadcast

Kosar is probably a bit crazy. His concussion history is well-known. I remember reading that he's gone through some cutting edge therapy after years of debilitating symptoms and damaging meds. All I heard during the game was someone with no monitor at all; nothing he said was outrageously wrong at the core from a QB's point of view, imo, rather than an evaluating coach or pro color analyst who has an obligation to be diplomatic. Of course, he was totally inappropriately candid in the stuff he said but I think the reaction is out of proportion among the fans. No idea if our WR coach is any good, do you ?

Perhaps it touched a nerve because we're all apprehensive about how this group will pan out & the hype is high. The fact that he didn't hold back or balance his comments with the tiny evidence sample he was looking at & drawing wildly negative conclusions was funny to me but he was not wrong about the miscues. I can't explain his antipathy to Clemens but, again, the guy performs very inconsistently for a player of his talent and experience.

The fact that Kosar never got that the plays being run were deliberately non-adjusted for evaluation/rep purposes; THAT was just nuts & also made me laugh but it did clarify why some things were working & others weren't when he explained what a QB would really have done, facing that situation. The irony for me is that I feel better about how the D backfield played than I would have because of his insights.

Rare candid insight, imo. I think Kosar and Billick, for eg, would be an awesome announcer team if they could get Kosar's meds balanced.

The whole broadcast was comically parochial with all the Ohio-centric trivia which made his brutal grumblings all the more startling. Did rave about ex-Buckeye Laurinaitis as well, though, didn't he ? He also said some cruel stuff about some Browns players, esp Weeden. This guy is a dinosaur like Hanifan or Ditka. I remember his telling that he used to keep smelling salts in his wristband to snap him out of a concussed daze here & there. Messed up his post NFL life in no small part due to that, I'd guess.

Maybe we should be neither angry nor laughing at him at all, on reflection. I certainly don't think the references to his daughter were necessary. How can you deplore his treatment of Clemens, etc, as inappropriate & then bring that up ? Below Clan standards, I would have thought.

I don't agree. Any guy who would be as unprofessional as Bernie was- calling the Rams' receivers "an embarrassment" among his many other transgressions- yet NOT be embarrassed having a daughter who works as a porn star has skewed standards. One group of guys are going out there busting their ass and giving it everything they have to make a team. Another individual spreads her legs on camera for money. Who is more honorable? When you cross the line from being objectively critical to sarcastic and unprofessional, it's gonna' get personal. Kosar is a complete tool- punch drunk, formerly financially bankrupt and ill-equipped to handle the responsibilities of being a professional announcer. He deserves all the criticism he receives.

Re: Jeff Fisher responded to Bernie Kosar broadcast

It'll be interesting too see if the Browns scramble to replace Kosar in the booth. He's an unpredictable wild card and an embarrassment. He needs help, not a platform to sound stupid.

As far as reactions being out of proportion, the fact that someone in the Rams organization deemed Kosar's behavior bad enough to relay to Fisher, and to have Fisher subsequently make a public condemnation of Kosar's comments, tells me any and all criticism of Kosar was more than justified.

Some observations from Nick Wagoner :

    Fisher angered by Kosar's criticism

    August, 10, 2013
    By Nick Wagoner | ESPN.com

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Working as the color analyst for Cleveland’s preseason television broadcast, former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar did not hold back with his observations and opinions during Thursday night’s game against the St. Louis Rams.

Through the course of the broadcast, Kosar was regularly critical of the Rams, focusing much of his ire on the team’s wide receivers and backup quarterback Kellen Clemens.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher said he "lost a lot of respect" for Browns broadcaster Bernie Kosar.

Asked about it on Saturday, Rams coach Jeff Fisher first noted that he believes the Browns to be a “first-class organization” before making it clear he was none too pleased with Kosar’s idea of color commentary.

“I guess I’m a little disappointed,” Fisher said. “I feel bad for them that they had someone doing the broadcast who would feel the need to speak that way about players, specifically on our team, and coaches for that matter. I’m just surprised that Bernie has such a lack of respect for players and for this game. So I lost a lot of respect for him."

Kosar didn’t waste much time in trashing the Rams, and did so repeatedly throughout the evening.

After an incomplete pass intended for Tavon Austin: “I really think that he didn’t overthrow him and that Austin has to make that catch in the NFL. I see why Sam [Bradford] has been struggling watching how bad these receivers have been for him.”

After Nick Johnson dropped a pass: “This is actually not a bad throw. These St. Louis receivers are horrible. That’s a drop there.”

When play-by-play man Jim Donovan asked Kosar what he’d think if he knew that some of the Rams receivers' parents were watching, Kosar said he “would be embarrassed.”

Kosar then turned his attention from to receivers coach Ray Sherman.

“I’m checking through the itinerary here of guys and coaches to see who the receivers coach is to make sure I don’t know who this guy is because he’s not doing very good either,” Kosar said.

Kosar did offer praise to Rams quarterback Sam Bradford, but he didn’t feel the same way about Clemens. In fact, many of Kosar’s comments came off as though he held a personal vendetta of some sort against Clemens. When Donovan told Kosar, who had been asking for the use of a telestrator throughout the evening, that he might get one if he were on his best behavior, Kosar responded with a seemingly out-of-nowhere shot at Clemens.

“I must not be because the next quarterback in, me and him haven’t done too well with each other, too,” Kosar said.

Clemens wasn’t in the game at the time.

Later, when Clemens entered the game, Donovan relayed a story about Clemens giving an autograph to Pope Benedict XVI. Kosar said he didn’t think he’d ever want it, and then took another shot at Clemens.

“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned,” Kosar said. “I have to watch him the whole fourth quarter.”

On Saturday, Fisher said he didn’t believe Kosar had studied the Rams well enough to be making such sweeping generalizations.

“I didn’t think they were justified,” Fisher said.

Re: Jeff Fisher responded to Bernie Kosar broadcast

At one point or other we see a player take a huge hit and wonder if their future children will come into the world cross-eyed--lol! Guess that theory is put to rest! However I did see the Howie Long interview about he and his family--I regret now that the Rams where not able to get Chris' younger brother on the Rams squad. As to family connections following in their father's footprints, don't think I'd like "Lexxi" to become a Rams cheerleader--lol!!

I would be surprised if they did. According to Browns beat writer Mary Kay Calbot, the Browns are reviewing the situation, but anyone who hires Kosar to do color commentary probably knows what they're getting. A weak press release style apology is my expectation.
