Just read this on ESPN and rushed on here. This is good news indeed. Our defense needs a lift.

    Dunbar re-signs with Rams

His four-game NFL suspension over, linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar has agreed to terms with the Rams and will re-sign with the team today, pending a physical.

Dunbar’s return comes at a time when the Rams’ defense is struggling both to stop the run and the pass.

In addition, the status of his September replacement, Will Witherspoon, is uncertain for Sunday’s game with Jacksonville because of a hamstring injury.

Dunbar finished second on the team with 157 tackles a year ago, was fourth on the team with 4 sacks, and added two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He brings a much-needed physical presence to a defense that has been a big disappointment four games into 2013.

Dunbar’s suspension was for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The Rams don’t have to clear a roster spot for him until the end of this week.

    * * *

Here is Jim Thomas' story in the Sept. 5 Post-Dispatch about speculation the Rams would re-sign Dunbar after his suspension:

It has been a rapid fall for linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar. From the team’s second-leading tackler a year ago, to an NFL suspension announced in August, to released from the team on Sept. 3.

But Dunbar’s release may have been nothing more than salary cap maneuvering designed to give the Rams some much-needed cap room entering the 2013 season.

For his part, coach Jeff Fisher didn’t rule out a return by Dunbar once his four-game suspension is over for violating NFL policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

“Of course, there’s a good possibility (Dunbar will be back),” Fisher said. “Anything’s possible.”

A league source familiar with the situation told the Post-Dispatch there was a “very strong possibility” that Dunbar would be back with the team following his suspension. But of course, there are no guarantees.

So why do this now? Each NFL team had to be cap compliant by Sept. 4. In other words, they had to be under the salary cap limit of $123 million. The Rams were very tight against the cap before Dunbar’s release, and releasing him now frees up roughly $1 million of salary cap space.

If the team re-signs him at the end, or near the end of his suspension, it might do so for a lower rate than the $1.3 million he was scheduled to make as a base salary in 2013. Under that contract, he was scheduled to be a free agent after this season.

Fisher was asked if there were any other incidents or problems that may have contributed to Dunbar’s release.

“There was nothing. No,” Fisher said. “He and I discussed it. We’ve got (the suspension) put behind us as far as the club and his teammates were concerned. No other issues. It was just a decision we had to make.

“We haven’t said this is it as far as his future’s concerned. But we thought it was in the best interest of the organization right now.”

Good news. I think the Rams handled this one well. It will be interesting to see if they've signed him beyond this year (or, perhaps, added an option for 2014) given that JLD was going to be a FA at the end of 2013 under is old deal.

Are there a couple of safeties in that bag of tricks?
Are they moving Ogletree to the right side or is Dunbar going to the right side?

I just hope he is in decent shape, and passes his physical. It is possible his return could be the spark that ignites a bonfire within our D. There have to be a lot of pent up emotions, frustrations among our defensive players who played much better last year. If Jo-Lon somehow accomplishes this, and our D gets fired up, this could even spread to our offense - namely our offensive line. It would be great to see them play more inspired football. When it comes to the running game, it really isn't rocket science - if there is an actual hole to run through, I'm sure any of our rbs are capable of running through it.

Great news and a much needed player in the face of other defensive woes. I think he'll be a great teacher for Ray Ray Armstrong and make James Laurinaitis' job of calling the defensive signals easier as he'll know the system. Hope this happens as planned.

    Go Rams!
