JT Expects Rams to Pursue Pro Bowl CB Alterraun Verner

" —I think Verner makes a lot of sense. Not only does Fisher now about him, but he blossomed into a Pro Bowler last season when Gregg Williams was a senior defensive assistant. Williams even mentioned Verner at his introductory press conference at Rams Park last week. In fact, I would be surprised if the Rams didn’t make an effort to get him signed. Not as sure on Maclin. How much does he want? Would Maclin be willing to sign a one-year deal (I believe he has indicated he would.) Do you take Maclin over drafting someone in what is said to be a deep WR draft? Do the Rams have any concerns over Maclin’s durability? All questions that would have to be answered. "

Releasing Cortland Finnegan would free 7 million in cap space, which I believe would be roughly enough to lock down Alterraun Verner. Probably in the 8 million range. He is an excellent zone coverage and man coverage corner and is one of the smartest players in football. He would be a great addition.

EDIT: Jeff Fisher actually drafted Alterraun Verner in 2010, and Gregg Williams just coached him this past year. I'd be surprised to actually not see him as a Ram next year, especially considering how bad we need DB/CB help.

I am all for it! In fact, keep Finnegan at a way reduced salary ( 1 to 2 million). Sign Verneur, then you have an abundence of corners at your disposal. Plus the fact that Mcloud can play the nickel a bit too, we would have depth and versility.

My hope for FA is that the Rams reduce their list of top draft needs by (at least) one by signing a high-quality starter at C, G, OT, CB, OLB or S.

    Verner would qualify.

So if the Rams sign Verner (which I'm all for) are the starters Verner and Jenkins, or Verner and Johnson? Do the Rams use a (relatively) high pick on a corner and let Jenkins, Johnson, and that pick battle it out for the spot opposite Verner?

I'd love to see Verner in horns, and also use a late round draft pick on a CB. We need Safety and OL help the most. It'll be interesting to see what direction Les Snead takes. I think obtaining a key free agent like Verner and maybe even some veteran help at Safety or OL could really put us in a position to take the BPA (ala Sammy Watkins)

Gregg Williams also said they almost cut him last year. It just goes to show you what a good coach and proper scheme can do a for a player. I hope Williams can take our young DBs and turn them into pro bowlers. They both have skills. Verner would be a nice get.

Certainly would be a nice addition because of relationships with both Jeff and Gregg. My first question is what will our secondary look like and secondly what will the monetary impact of landing him be on our ability to re-sign Rodger Saffold. Making an offer is not a guarantee of getting him but you have to think our chances are pretty good given the coaching relationships.

On the downside is again we're going to make a big $ commitment to a FA and do we want to go through the likely adjustment period rather than spend fewer $ on a draftee that will also go through adjustment but cost us less initially. We'll see come 3/11.

    Go Rams!

I'd say we sign Verner and let him deal with the right side of the field, then let Trumaine and Janoris duke it out for #2 honours. I would at this point guess that Johnson will win the battle and Jenkins will man the slot (still playing at least 60%+ of snaps).

I think that makes a lot of sense. Depth is required number 1 and stiff competition is always good.

I would be all in favour of Verner in horns. He played great last year under Williams, and I'd hope he'd bring some of the same nastiness and knowledge to our locker room.

It's also worth keeping in mind that at 5'10, he's not as sizeable as some of the other receivers in our division - he's going to have his work cut out for him up against the big guys.

I would like to see us sign Verner and pass on Maclin.

One thing we have to remember about Jenkins is he flourished in the Greg Williams system in his first year. Then last year in the play off the wr 10 yds Walton defense Jenkins was not so good. Bringing back Williams makes everyone in this defense a better player. Im for bringing in Verner if we dont have to over pay for him. We have some good young up and coming corners right now who can play in Williams system.

It appears that Bernard Pollard who was just signed wants to convince his secondary mate Verner to re-up with the Titans as well. No big deal, I would prefer drafting a talented CB like Justin Gilbert than overpay on some FA.

    Go Rams!
