Keith Null is (almost certainly) NOT Kurt Warner

I find it amusing how often I read comments from fans calling for the Rams to start Keith Null now that Marc Bulger is out for 4-6 weeks (and, in some cases, these calls came before the injury).

    Keith freakin' Null?!?!!?!?

What possible reason can ANYONE have for concluding that he should get a chance to start for the Rams? As HUb pointed out... fans have not watched him practice and, in all likelihood, never saw him play in college. The only chance most Rams fans would have had to watch him was in preseason, and we all know how little that tells us about a player's potential.

The only "logical" reason I can think of for suggesting that Keith Null should get a shot is Kurt Warner. I guess some people figure that if Kurt can come from the Arena League and become an NFL MVP, then perhaps lightning could strike again with Keith Null.

Heck, Keith even looks a little bit like Kurt:

Let's be perfectly clear here, though....

KEITH NULL IS NOT KURT WARNER!!!!!!!!!

I mean... you know... unless he is.

And I can assure you that Null doesn't even really look like that picture that is posted there. I got the opportunity to chat with him for a second when he was leaving the Dome Sunday. Was sporting a buzzed cut, and a bushier beard. No mistaking him for Kurt ...

Null is a very nice guy, I picked that up from a few seconds of chat :-) But I doubt he is ever going to be anything other than a clipboard holder ...

Re: Keith Null is (almost certainly) NOT Kurt Warner

And I don't want anyone to think I'm an anti-Nullite. He seems like a good kid. The interviews I've heard or read really make me like the guy. I hope he's the greatest Ram QB of all time at the end of his career.

I'm just saying that throwing him the keys to the car and telling him it's his for the next 6 games, sends the message to the other 52 that the rest of 2009 is nothing more than an audition for 2010. For the other rookies and fringe players, that may be fine. But for the veterans, they are not going to take well to throwing away better than 1/3rd of the season.

So HUb, are you saying you don't want to see Null at all?

No, I'm saying I want to see the QB that gives us the best chance of winning. If Null is the better QB, put him on the field. If Boller starts but sucks so bad that Null is the better option, put him on the field. If Boller is lights out and we go up by 40 points in the 3rd quarter, turn to Null, and......put him on the field.

But not just to burn up a 6 game audition.

You never know what a player can do if they don't play.

Why not find out if Null is a diamond in the rough?

Why did they draft him if he is nothing more than a clipboard holder?

If the Rams go down big against the Seahawks, why shouldn't he play?

It would give the fans a spark while letting them know they're crazy if he fails.

Re: Keith Null is (almost certainly) NOT Kurt Warner

Here's what I see....it's easier to yank a #2 QB than a #1 QB. If Boller stinks, I bet they won't hesitate to throw in Null. They'll give Boller a chance because:

    1. Boller could be the #1 here next year if Bulger doesn't come back
    2. Boller has driven this offense pretty well at times.

I'm in agreement with Spags that Boller should start our next game. Barring injury he should start the rest of the season. However if we are getting smoked or have a huge lead ourselves say in the last game or 2 of the season I would like to see Null get a chance at real regular season game speed.

    GO RAMS!!!!!!!!

how will you know any of this if he doesn't get the chance to play, let him play and see what happens, maybe he shows everyone that he will not be the answer and the Rams continue there search or he does show some promise in which case he provides them another option, either way NO ONE knows what he can or cannot do at this point.

Re: Keith Null is (almost certainly) NOT Kurt Warner

The point is that we won't know what Null can do until he has played a number of games. As has already been pointed out, Devaney and Spags must have seen something in him in the first place; if not, why did they draft him at all?

It would appear that certain contributors to this site are assuming that Null must be rubbish because he was drafted so low but, at 196, he was a higher selection than Tom Brady (199) and undrafted multiple Pro Bowl QBs like Jeff Garcia And Kurt Warner, to name but two. Come to think of it, Marc Bulger himself was only drafted in the sixth round and he became a Pro Bowler.

It appears that Bulger's days as a starter are numbered. We know what Kyle Boller can do and he clearly isn't the future of this franchise; we should let Null have a run in the team to see if we need to spend big bucks and a high draft pick on our quarterback of the future in the 2010 draft.

    Maybe, just maybe, we don't.

Re: Keith Null is (almost certainly) NOT Kurt Warner

I see everyone's point. Here's what I think will eventually happen. Null will start one of the last three games of the season. He just will, they will want to see what they have in him. You don't play him this week because this is the best chance for the Rams to get a win the rest of the year (and validate my 2-14 preseason prediction). I could see Null against the whiners.

"We don't know unless he plays."

Well, I guess that's true, not only of Keith Null, but pretty much every other QB on the planet who is not currently the starter for an NFL team.

Let's start Keith Null this week and, if that does not work, sign a new QB off another team's practice squad and give him a chance to start until we find the next Kurt Warner.

Seriously, guys... the goal, whether we're in first or last place, is to win games. The guy who is most likely to win games for us at QB right now is Kyle Boller. If he stinks up the joint, and Spags wants to give Null a shot, so be it. But let's not be silly about it, shall we?

yeah it's certainly not time to give him starts..i think boller can do a decent enough job, if he goes back to his turnover-heavy ways maybe give null a chance.

here's an idea, start Null for the rest of the season and see if he's got it. at least at this point if there is any sign that he'll be any good you don't have to be tempted with drafting another QB since this season is lost.

    Okay... ENOUGH!!!!

    Here's your answer:

Steve Spagnuolo and Pat Shurmur, who know a lot more about this than any of us, obviously DON'T SEE NULL AS THE QB OF THE FUTURE!!!!!!! That's why they're not going to start him for the rest of the year. He's not ready, and he probably never will be.

A lot of people forget Kurt's resume before he took over. He had experience in the Arena League and NFL Europe before he took over for Trent Green. Null does not have that experience. He is a development project. Could he be a diamond in the rough? Sure. But a diamond in the rough needs careful cutting and polishing to shine. Screw up the cut or the shine and it loses a lot of its value. If he were ready to play starter he would have been at least moved into the 2nd string position ahead of Boller. But he wasn't.
