Kennison intent on winning back Rams fans

    By Bill Coats
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Wide receiver Eddie Kennison returned Wednesday to the locker room at Rams Park for the first time in 10 years. “Fast Eddie,” the Rams’ first-round draft pick in 1996, was traded to New Orleans in ‘98. He signed a one-year contract with the Rams on Tuesday. Here are some excerpts from our chat Wednesday:

*On being back in St. Louis: “I think one of the most important things is not only to win the trust and respect of the guys in the locker, but also to win the trust and respect of our fans. If I remember correctly, I didn’t leave on a good note. So, I’ll try to get them back and . . . cheering for Eddie Kennison again.”

*On why the Rams fans soured on him: “That’s a good question. We had some bad seasons; I don’t think we had a winning season while I was here. The last season was 4-12, and it just wasn’t good overall. The fans want to win, and the years when I was here, we weren’t winning.”

*On adjusting to the Rams’ offense after having experience with Al Saunders’ system in KC: “There are some things that are just a little bit different, but nothing that I can’t handle (by) a couple of nights a week getting into the playbook really good and really studying the new verbiage. So, it’ll be pretty easy.”

*On the possibility of playing Sunday vs. the Giants: “I’m in great shape. But on game day, the tempo is a lot faster, it’s a lot more competitive, and I’m not in game shape yet. But I will be. . . . I think Scott (Linehan) and Al are very fair guys, and if I told them I could 20, 25 plays, I think they’d give me that opportunity.”

All for now . . . more after practice.

He may be old but he is better than Bennett. I will welcome him back no problem. I am just wondering how much of a chance is Burton going to get and if Avery is going to be able to make a contribution? And what do the siging of Kennison say about them, if he move ahead of them and the dept chart.

Nothing against Kennison but I would much rather see the young guys play.

hey guys lets see how many snaps he gets first, he`s just added into the mix at this point, just because he`s been brought in to cover the injury to Drew Dropnett dont mean he`s gonna get his number 2 wideout role!

I would much rather see more of all the receivers and less of Donnie Jones.

I just think Avery and Burton are awsome, and need to be played.

Hmm. I hope he performs better than Bennett. If he doesn't, then I will only get even more frustrated about the release of Bruce.

Too bad Avery and Burton didn't get the chance to move up the roster. They deserve it. Who knows, if Kennison isn't ready maybe Burton or Avery will take the #2 spot.

barring injury, later in the season the Rams will be starting games with three WRs on the field:

Holt and Burton outside with Avery in the slot
