Late third qurter field goal.....?
Down twenty-one to three on fourth and two, Spags goes for the three.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
They were down 21? Really?
No, they were down 18 and the field goal brought it to a 2 possession game. If you go for it and fail, the game is over. I would have gone for it but conventional wisdom says make it a 2 possession game. And honestly, as Spags said after the game, it worked. If not for the personal foul, they would have had a reasonable chance on the second to last drive.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
They probably should have gone for the first field goal opportunity, when they were down 14-3, and then they should have went for it the second time. I think they got the plays backwards.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
Actually they got it right. Warner was still in the first trip down there and there was no sign that the defense could stop him. The Rams needed to match the Cardinals score for score.
Lienart was in during the second trip, and the Rams defense was doing a much better job of stopping him. In that situation, lessening the number of possessions was more important.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
it was actually a good call because the Rams drove it to the 7 yard line and just couldn't punch it in. They got exactly what they wanted stupid penalties and we just couldn't punch it in. They had faith in defense didn't give up points, but the offense didn't give us the points we needed.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
I think it was absolutely the right call. Not because I did not have faith in our o in executing the play, but because I had faith in our defense shutting down Matt Leinhart.
The field goal made it a two possession game, which is huge. Spags followed up the next drive by going for it every fourth down.
It was not fourth down territory at the end of the third, but the next drives we had to get the TDs. We got one, and could have got the second if Gibs and Bulger had their timing down better.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
By passing on the TD we needed 15 to tie. Taking the 7 here we need 11 to tie, so at the end we just need the FG to tie or the TD that was so so close to get the win.
By taking the 3 the only one who benefits is Spags.Patient, not saintly.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
Do you just like complaining without any real analysis? In your own explanation you say the team had an opportunity to tie the game at the end. If they had failed on that 4th down play you are complaining about, they wouldn't have had the opportunity to tie it at that point.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
I'm sorry. I'm taking the next TD that we did score for granted. And also the 2 pt conversion, but so are we all.
The point I should make is that Spags bailed. He settled here in the third to just trade scores the rest of the way, figurring 35 to 12 is better for his future than 35 to 3. There is no difference.Patient, not saintly.

Don't say it didn't at that point look like where we were headed.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
Ill tell you this though, with 13 in there The Cards are the best looking team of all that we've played. They're bigger and faster on both sides of the ball. Just like last year Wiznhut has them coached up at the right time. If Warner can finish they'll get a second chance in January.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
I disagree, we weren't lighting the world on fire on offense, and the defense has made giving up 90 yard TD drives a profession, so atleast get something rather than nothing at that point.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
You don't really think spags was thinking about himself when he made that decision do you?
If so you have absolutely no idea what steve spagnuolo is all about.
Unless you think he has just been spewing a bunch of crap since he has been in STL, his team first mentality debunks your previous three posts.
And Kurt Warner WAS NOT PLAYING.
Had he thought we had to trade touchdowns with Kurt, I could almost guarantee that he would have went for the TD, however Leinhart is NO Kurt Warner and he was confident is his defense to buckle down.

Re: Late third qurter field goal.....?
You're right 71, 13 went down in the 2nd, not the third, but damnit man we're on the 2.
I saw the whole thing on the HD. Spags bailed. And at that point I crushed a half full can of Natty on my forehead.
I know what you hyenas are doing. You're trying to cut the old bull out of the herd. I hope you're right about Spags, but he hasn't achieved saint status just yet. He has to EARN it. Sooner or later the honeymoon's over.
