LB J. Stewart released to make room for Pead

    By Jim Thomas

Linebacker Jonathan Stewart, an undrafted rookie from Texas A&M, has been released from the Ramsí 53-man roster to make room for the return of running back Isaiah Pead.

Pead missed the teamís season-opening victory over Arizona because of a one-game suspension for violating the NFLís substance abuse policy, but was reinstated Monday. The move leaves the Rams with the odd mix of five running backs and just five linebackers on the 53-man roster.

But with so many teams using three_ and four-wide receiver sets, there isnít as much need for linebackers on defense. In the Arizona game, for example, Rams outside linebacker Will Witherspoon was in for only 19 plays _ or 27 percent of the teamís 71 plays on defense.

Witherspoon comes out in the nickel package, when the opposing team goes to three wideouts, and is replaced by third corner Trumaine Johnson. Johnson was in for 53 plays against the Big Red, or 75 percent of the Ramsí defensive snaps.

Stewart, 6-3, 254, was a pregame scratch for the Arizona game because of a hip injury, but was expected to return this week. Minus Stewart, the Rams have only undrafted rookies Ray Ray Amstrong and Daren Bates backing up starters James Laurinaitis, Alec Ogletree, and Witherspoon.

I bet that we try to bring Stewart back on the practice squad. I personally thought Chase Reynolds was the guy that was going to get cut. It may also be that the injury to his hip is relatively serious, or at least serious enough to keep him out of action while Reynolds is playing special teams for us.

Rams release CB Darren Woodard from practice squad, paving the way to sign LB Jonathan Stewart there if he clears waivers tomorrow.

Miami signs former Rams QB Austin Davis to practice squad and released DT Al Lapuaho from practice squad; Lapuaho had been in Rams camp.

Right on! JStewart to the practice squad, providing he clears waivers. Hope he fully recovers.

I had thought it would be Bates that would be 'moved' in order to accommodate Pead but it seems this LB, Bates, is making a good impression as well.

Now Pead ... show us what you're really made of and RUN!

Good thing Stewart made the PS. I need at least some Aggie representation on the Rams team.

So who’s the cover at MLB if JL goes down, is it Witherspoon?

Don't worry, I am sure there will be some outlandish mocks by some outlandish rams fans predicting Manziel with one of those first round picks because "you don't pass on a player like him" and hes "lightyears better than Sam".
