LeVoir Happy To Be Back With The Rams

LeVoir happy to be back with Rams

    BY JIM THOMAS
    Thursday, October 27, 2011

Offensive tackle Mark LeVoir says Rams Park looks the same, "just four years older."

The same could be said for LeVoir, although his hair is longer than it was in 2007.

Signed off Chicago's practice squad on Nov. 13 of that year, LeVoir was on the Rams' pregame inactive list for the final seven games of '07.

He returned to training camp with the Rams in 2008, but was released at the end of the preseason. Now, after stints with New England and Baltimore, he's back in St. Louis.

The concussion suffered by right tackle Jason Smith left the Rams with only six healthy offensive linemen. And with Smith unlikely to return any time soon, the Rams signed LeVoir, who was released by Baltimore last week.

Asked what he remembered about his previous stint in St. Louis, LeVoir said, "Obviously, I was much younger in the league, trying to figure out still what to do and figure out what this league was about. The coaching staff and situation here was a lot different than it is now."

LeVoir, 6 feet 7, 310 pounds, played in three games this season with one start for the Ravens. He was on the inactive list when the Ravens played here on Sept. 25.

Although his starting assignment for Baltimore this year came at left guard (against Tennessee), LeVoir has played tackle almost exclusively during his career.

"Guard just happened this year out of a pinch," LeVoir said. "They needed somebody to play guard, so I got asked to play guard in the preseason."

LeVoir, 29, knows Rams offensive line coach Steve Loney from his previous stint here, and knows offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels from his time in New England. LeVoir played for the Patriots from 2008-2010, including two starts at right tackle in '08 when McDaniels was the Patriots' offensive coordinator.

Because of his time with the Patriots, LeVoir is very familiar with the Rams' offensive scheme.

And that's a good thing for the Rams, because LeVoir figures to be the third offensive tackle Sunday against New Orleans. If something happens to left tackle Rodger Saffold or right tackle Adam Goldberg (who replaces Smith), LeVoir's in.

To make room for LeVoir on the active roster, the Rams released rookie linebacker Jabara Williams. A seventh-round pick out of Stephen F. Austin, Williams played special teams the past two weeks after being on the inactive list for the first four games.

Williams' departure means the Rams don't have a 2011 draft pick left on their roster taken lower than fourth-rounder Greg Salas.

    Injury/illness update

With Smith and defensive tackle Darell Scott each dealing with a concussion, they were sent home by the Rams on Wednesday.

"Didn't even put them in a meeting," coach Steve Spagnuolo said.

Because he experienced neck pain when suffering his concussion in Dallas, Smith was sent to see a spine specialist earlier this week. According to Spagnuolo there is nothing structurally wrong, but Smith does have a bruised neck.

Two other Rams — Saffold and running back Jerious Norwood — were sent home because of flu- and cold-like illnesses.

"We're not taking any chances with anything that might be contagious," Spagnuolo said.

Also sitting out Wednesday's practice were wide receiver Danario Alexander (hamstring), cornerback Justin King (groin), and linebacker Brady Poppinga (calf). After sitting out practice last week, defensive end C.J. Ah You (wrist) returned to practice on a limited basis.

    Ram-blings

With QB Tom Brandstater staying on the 53-man roster this week, cornerback Nate Ness was re-signed to Brandstater's former spot on the practice squad.

    • Former Rams C Andy McCollum visited Rams Park on Wednesday; he and former Rams WR Az-Zahir Hakim will be introduced during the game Sunday as part of the Rams' alumni program.

    • The Rams will wear their throwback uniforms from the 1999 Super Bowl championship season on Sunday.

Re: LeVoir Happy To Be Back With The Rams

Let's face it this guy is probably happy to be anywhere in the NFL right now. I wish him the best of luck and hope he makes a difference for us. We know he's not likely to be around after the season ends. Sorry for my cynicism, but that's what this season has done to me.

    Go Rams!
