Looking back, 2010 was an odd year. Yes, we got a few lucky turns here and there, but then again we were 1 Clifton Ryan fumble from being a playoff team last year.
This year......as you said, the perfect storm of adversity.
Not as good as they seemed in 2010, but not as bad as 2011 seems.? The real St.Louis Rams are some where in the middle, in my opinion.
With disappointment
As an outsider, I see two things that kinda stick out:
1. Shurmur is better at adapting to what he has to work with than McD. McD might be an X's and O's savant, but you also have to work within the limitations of what you're given, not just trying to attack the weaknesses of the other team (see: Broncos, Denver).
2. Lack of quality depth. You've got some good players, but at this point the team should be a lot deeper talent-wise across the board. Especially notable are RB, WR, TE, OL. I will say the performance of the secondary is outstanding given how many DBs you've lost, which is probably a testament to Spags ability as a DC.
Moving forward, gotta protect Bradford - he's already showing signs of battered QB syndrome. If that means making him a dink and dunk guy for awhile so be it. Also, *really* need to build team depth. 2nd item seems unlikely without some kind of regime change as it would mean admitting that a lot of guys devaney brought in probably need to be cut loose in favor of a complete makeover on offense. I mean sims-walker, really? *I* could have told you how that was going to work out.
Real easy schedule last season. Seems everybody got better except the Rams. Expectations were way too high by everybody from fans to writers.
2010's outcome was true progress, destroyed this year by schedule, injuries, and lack of OTAs.
