    Macklin, Rams agree to terms

Washington free agent Macklin, Rams agree to terms
    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    03/20/2008

Looking for depth at wide receiver and cornerback, the Rams were scheduled to meet Thursday with two free agents from the Washington Redskins — Reche Caldwell and David Macklin.

Macklin agreed to a one-year deal, and the Rams were still trying to work out a deal with Caldwell. Terms of Macklin's deal were not disclosed.

Caldwell, 28, was a second-round draft pick by San Diego in 2002 out of Florida. His best season came in 2006 when he lead New England in receptions (61), reception yards (760) and scored four touchdowns.

But after an offseason in which the Patriots added Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Donte’ Stallworth to their receiver corps, Caldwell was released last Sept. 3. He subsequently signed with the Redskins, appearing in eight games and catching 15 passes for 141 yards.

Macklin, 29, entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick by Indianapolis in 2000 out of Penn State. In four seasons with the Colts and three with Arizona, Macklin started 75 games at cornerback. He was a full-time starter for two years in Indy and two years with the Big Red.

He signed with Washington last season and appeared in only six games, with no starts. Macklin has 14 career interceptions. One of his best stretches of play came in the 2003 playoffs with Indianapolis, when he had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in three postseason games.

Ok signing...I'd love to get Caldwell.

Macklin is a good pick up.

With Brown on the edge of being gone and the average-bad cb's we have hopefully he'll be some help.

If we end up with Caldwell too, you have to think he's a FOAS (Friend of Al Saunders) and seen as someone who will be a contributor in his scheme.

Alright, another solid pick up. I like what I am seeing here, nothing flashy, but we are filling the holes that need to be filled. I don't have any real intrest in Caldwell though.

Good, good. As Mik just said: solid -- nothing flashy but filling the needs.

:r Welcome to the Rams Mack!

This signing does nothing for me.

What do the Rams need with another CB who is no longer starter material? At the nickel/dime spots, I'd rather see further development of Wade and Bartell.

If the Rams are going to acquire a veteran, it should be someone we'd want starting along with Tye "Bane of Tx" Hill.

(By the way... if we sign Reche Caldwell, my reaction would essentially be the same)

You're right Ramer, it probably can't hurt us. At least he'll be the 5th CB over Lenny "I'm legally disabled" Walls. Watching the Dallas game last year was painful. I used my TiVo to watch the long scores by the Cowboys and more often than not, Walls was the one in coverage. Like the one where Witten caught the ball at like the five and just ran over the guy covering to get into the endzone. The guy who willingly got walked over? Walls.

Caldwell is a bust. He couldn't find a place in SD, who has historically had horrid WR's and then he couldn't do anything in NE. Sure, he was a fairly reliable target, but he wasn't enough for them when they finally got real receivers.

Smells like Mike Rumph Lenny Walls to me. This guy couldn't even beat out undrafted rookies. Wasn't Mike Rumph Redskin trash also.

The more reason we should stick with Hagans and/or Stanley (Derek better than Dominique, I think).

i don't want either one, they are bottom of the barrel shopping and i thought the RAMS were past that . i don't see them as solid . anyone know a LEIGH TORRANCE ? he is the guy that beat out and sent MACKLIN on his way from the SKINS i think .

i would rather commit to BARTELL , HILL , BASSEY , VINETT and BROWN ( he hasn't been found guilty as of right now so screw everyone until he is found guilty , i'm tired of the rumor garbage and he said she said ) and then find a young guy in the draft or undrafted free agents .

The only thing I remember by Caldwll is him dropping a pass in that AFC Championship CHOKE by the Pats two years ago, and him just looking back at the huddle with HUGE eyes.

Not exactly a fond memory of him, lol.

I'd prefer to keep Hagans around and see what he can do. Plus Stanely.
