make or break season for chris long

dont get me worng i love chris long but he hasnt really put up a decent season yet. i mean at the end of last season i saw glimpes of how good he can be. but what is holding him back is it the supporting cast around him, the defencive scheme, or what. i mean in college he was a beast. i know the nfl is alot fast gameplay then college. but only 9 sacks in his first 2 seasons. mario williams first 2 seasons he had 18.5 sacks and played for a horrible team, jared allen had 20 in his first to seasons, and dwight freeney 24 sack in 2 seasons. i know chris hasnt had alot of other great players around him but his overall skill he should have know problem to have a 10 sack season. why is leonard little putting up better numbers then long. i mean since 2008 little hasnt played a full season yet puts up more sacks. why is he not an elite defencive end yet

By decent I take it you mean Pro Bowl worthy? You say he should have no problem putting up 10 sacks in a season, but only 14 players in the league did so last year. That's pretty typical. And even when he came out, the scouting report on Long was that he was a more balanced player. Some of those guys getting double digit sacks are liabilities against the run because they get carried away trying to pad their stats. If nothing else, Long is disciplined.

That said, I agree that if Long doesn't have a big year, the bust whispers are going to start up again. I don't think he's a bust. If he was released today, he'd probably find work elsewhere in the league. However, he also has yet to live up to the lofty expectations that come with being drafted as early as he was.

You just don't outright and cut a player if his Dad is named Howie.
C Long is not bringing to the table what's desparately needed on the Rams defensive line.
Chris poses no threat at DE.
Oh yeah!, he has "Great Motor", but what's needed is to have opposing QB's on their backs, looking up at #72.
Last year was make or break for Long, the only highlights one remembers is his head-butting "COGs Moment" as the frustrations of being apart of a woeful defense that couldn't get to the Quarterback, couldn't stop the run (or pass, for that matter), one wonders if Spags, a supposite defensive specialist, is losing confidence in the Univ. of Virginia alum.
Chris Long needs to make some plays and break some backs.......or BUST!

In all fairness C. Long had to learn two defensive schemes in his first and second year. Surely a learning curve would inhibit his play. Sacks are great but not the only measurement of a defensive lineman, how about stopping the run either by making the tackle or breaking up the intended play. Whereas. this is Mr Longs second year in this defensive scheme (remember the one that stopped the Pat's in their last S. B. appearance) he should be substantially improved, especially with some good D tackles to play along side of .... with good coaching, time in the system, and good D linemen to work along side of Mr. Long has the opportunity to excel.

If we ever acquire enough talent at DT to provide a solid push up the middle, Chris could end up looking like a star very quickly. Hopefully Robbins still has some gas in the tank - Ryan and Scott need to show marked improvement as well. Wouldn't it be sweet if we get lucky with one of our 2010 DE draft selections as well? If Long can stay healthy in 2010, there is no reason to believe he won't show even more improvement over last year.

Agree, you are correect in your assessment, however, I'll go even further as to submit that the Rams defensive unit as a whole must come together as one (D line, LBs and DBs). I hear this guy Selvie from the Draft is a Baby Leonard little.
One thing about Chris Long, he does show improvement from one year to the next. This season should be no exception for #72. Make or break season?
Hopefully, Chris can make this a breakout season.

Re: make or break season for chris long

I love how Long is in his "make or break" season simply because one statistical category of his is not on par with 3 specific individuals drafted over the past decade, one of which is a super-freak without a physical equal at his position.

    Perspective.

long was never considered to be an elite pass rushing end, but he's great against the run. right now he fights hard and does a good job of applying pressure but usually doesn't end up with the sack, give him a pass rusher on the other side for the o to think about and you'll see him complete more of those plays.

Bulger's gone so who's the next contestant on the Scapegoat Is? Chris Long, that's right Chris you now will be blamed for the failures of the coaching staff, the defense, no not just your position but even the short comings of other players on the defense as well. That's not all, you will be called a bust because your not a sack machine. Not satisfied yet, that's ok because there's more Chris. Fans will compare you to other draft picks who play completely different style of football than you. You will also be shown guys who were drafted below you who have recorded more sacks and be told that only if the Rams had drafted such and such instead of you. There you have it Chris enjoy your stay upon the throne as the next contestant on the Scapegoat is.

This is interesting because I was just looking at the roster the other day and thinking how fortunate the Rams are to have Chris Long at this point in their rebuilding process.

Along with the rest of the returning squad, Long will be much improved, over last season. Rams fans are going to be pleasantly surprised with the improvement in all areas.

Right now, at this stage of the off-season, I'm thinking our Rams could make the playoffs.

There is simply no good reason for Rams fans to think otherwise!

Chris Long, James Lauranitis and O J Atogwe are the 3 mainstays that we rebuild our defense around.
