Marc Bulger
With all the talk about Al Saunders and how his offensive prowess/playbook is going to affect our team in a positive way. Randy McMichael will have a bigger role in our offense? Steven Jackson will be the main character/go to guy? The rookies we drafted have us all excited? We seem to be leaving out one very important name?
MARC BULGER
Marc had his worst season as a RAM last year.
12 games played, sacked 37 times, QB rating of 70.3 and a his completion percentage dropped under 60% for the first time at 58.5%.
Stating the obvious, our o-line has to protect Bulger much, much better. Also Bulger needs to throw the ball away instead of taking so many sacks.
Past Stats:
2006-16 games, sacked 49 times, QB rating 92.9, comp% (62.9)
2005- 8 games, sacked 26 times, QB rating 94.4, comp% (66.9)
2004-14 games, sacked 41 times, QB rating 93.7, comp% (66.2)
2003-15 games, sacked 37 times, QB rating 81.4, comp% (63.2)
2002- 7 games, sacked 12 times, QB rating 101.5,comp% (64.5)
Also Trent Green could be huge in the scheme of things. Marc Bulger has only once played the full 16 regular season games.

Re: Marc Bulger
So basically I see from all this that Bulger needs to learn to get rid of the ball quicker and not get sacked/hit so much!

Re: Marc Bulger
2006, sacked an average 3 times per game!! Ouch!! I went to Tom Brady's sacks for 2006 and he had only 26 or an average of 1.6.... I wonder why they made the play offs and the Rams didn't....

Re: Marc Bulger
I think that Saunders, if he truly goes to a run-centric offense, will be a huge assist in keeping Bulger upright and healthy this season.
I don't know the specific stats but those 37 sacks were probably in addition to about 40 plus hits.
There is more to a pass rush than just sacks. A quarterback hit is any pass play on which the defender knocks the quarterback to the ground. Each one of those hits is an opportunity to get hurt and or throw an INT.
With some improvement in pass protection, he should get hit less. Working on getting rid of the ball, he should get hit less. With a run-centric offense, he passes less, he should get hit less.
I expect Bulger to be healthy all or mostly all season. And I expect around 3100 yards, 20 TD, and the key, only 7 to 8 INT, translating <not precise> to approximately a QB Rating of about 99 to 102. This would make me happy, especially if the Rams are pounding the ball down peoples faces. In other words, a bit less is more where Bulger is concerned.
In addition, with the addition of Long and the developement of Carriker, Ryan and return of Little, and a fresher Glover.........I expect more QB hits on their guy. And I hope our secondary is prepared to take advantage.
This could be a surprising season for some poor shlobs!Semper Fi

Re: Marc Bulger
Brady got hit 45 times in addition to those sacks. That is about 10% of the time he passed the ball, or 1 in 10. He got hit quite a bit. I am not so sure that those sack totals translate to why they made the playoffs. Certainly it wouldn't be the sole reason. New England as a whole ranked 11th or so offensively in QB Hits. NO was about 6%. HOU and CIN were at about 8.5%.

Re: Marc Bulger
If Bulger plays 16 games, he'll throw for 4200+ yards in this offense ....

Re: Marc Bulger
A lotta yards has never been Bulger's problem. TD's is his shortcoming.

Re: Marc Bulger
moklerman, I agree. i'm not confident with Bulger being able to send it home for 6 consistently. That being said, i am going to refrain from bashing him anymore before this season starts.
He deserves a fresh start with the assumption of a healthy line and new 'O' coordinator.
Bulger has flaws. I'll be watching and hoping he overcomes them.
P.S. moklerman, i'm not accusing you of bashing Bulger. I am guilty of bashing him.
RAM ON!

Re: Marc Bulger
I don't know if I consider myself a Bulger basher but I'm certainly not a Bulger fan. Unfortunately, I realize my dislike of him has just as much to do with who he replaced as much as his performance on the field. It isn't Bulger's fault and I don't blame him for how things transpired but in the end, he'll never be "my guy".
