Marc Bulger...wait just one minute here!
Marc Bulger has been taking a beating on the field and also here at the ClanRam site. I'll admit I've been one of the offenders as far as picking on Bulger goes.
Not as harsh or blatant as some but nevertheless I'm guilty as charged.
Does everyone remember who our back-up quarterback was last season?
GUS FREROTTE
Gus was sent packing at the end of last season and then he hooked on with the Minnesota Vikings. (As their back-up QB for the 2008 season)
Gus landed the starting job after the Vikings started out 0-2 this season. Since Gus has been the starter the Vikings have a won/loss record of 7-3.
Now I know Gus is not totally responsible for the Vikings successful turnaround. Actually he's a small part of their success. A solid O-line, very good running game and very stingy defense has had more to do with the Vikings recent success. The bottom line is that the Vikings have been winning with Gus at the helm.
Blah, blah, blah.....
Well would anyone here put Gus Frerotte at the same talent level as Marc Bulger? Not me!
So I did a little comparison....(you knew this was coming)
Gus Frerotte (GF) vs. Marc Bulger (MB)
-----Pass comp/ Pass att
GF- 171/291, MB- 172/303
-----Pass Comp %
GF- 58.8%, MB- 56.8%
-----Passing Yards
GF- 2087, MB- 1828
-----TD passes
GF- 12, MB- 7
-----Interceptions
GF- 13, MB- 11
-----Pass comp. of 20+ yards
GF- 23, MB- 23
-----Pass comp. of 40+ yards
GF-8, MB- 7
-----Sacked
GF- 28, MB- 30
-----QB rate
GF- 76.1, MB- 67.1
-----Fumbles
GF- 4, MB- 5
-----Fumbles lost
GF- 1, MB- 4
As you can see the comparison is pretty close.
So maybe it's time to get off of Marc Bulger's back?
I can't speak for the rest of you but I would take Marc Bulger over Gus Frerotte every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
I would be willing to bet that if Marc Bulger had the same or at least the equivalent supporting cast that Gus Frerotte has. Any comparison would lean towards Marc Bulger in a big way.
GO MARC BULGER!!!!Last edited by laram0; -12-05-2008 at 02:45 PM.

Yeah! Go Gus...errr wait.
I agree with you somewhat. Bulger has been affected by his surrounding cast. But some of it is his fault. Hell, some of it is probably our fault, that's how many problems are in the Ram's current organization.

Re: Marc Bulger...wait just one minute here!
The rams are qb killers.
Like it or loathe it warner was looking horrible when he left us..
We have done the same to bulger, we will send him packing and in a couple of years he will surface again.
Meanwhile we can draft a certain favre or whomever, and in reality we will be wading through the rubleys, millers, walshes, furrers, chandlers etc etc. In my 24 years as a fan the rams have had 3 qbs worth mentioning. (not including green, who didn't play a whole season for us in his first stint)
There are precious few qb's that give a garbage team instant credibility. Even Warner couldn't do that for us when we lost our way.
The chances of us getting one are slim, really. How many dan marinos and favres are there?
I fear bulger may be too far damaged to be much good in a rams uniform, especially if we dont turn things around, talent wise.
So back in the doldrums for a year or 4.
vent over. This season is killing me, I have never ever been this low as a fan. I could moan all day about, o-line, bennett, holt, defense, play calling, the weather, but as I said vent over. The Breakfast Club. You want cheese with that?

Re: Marc Bulger...wait just one minute here!
So this "solid o-line" has allowed Gus to be sacked almost the exact number of times? Hmmmm. The names and reputations may be better for the Vikes yet they apparently dont protect much better.
Lets compare some of the key "supporting cast" members.
Steven Jackson - Adrian Peterson ---- I dont see a huge disparity if healthy.
Torry Holt - Bernard Berrian ---- Seriously?
Donny Avery - Bobby Wade ---- The ROOK has better numbers!
Joe Klop - Visanthe Shiancoe ---- No McMichael means edge to Gus.
Dane Looker - Sydney Rice ---- Push
We can look deeper into the roster of weapons but they really have NOTHING other than Chester Taylor that they consider a viable offensive weapon. Chester is usually in on 3rd downs only.
Where is this HUGELY advantageous "supporting cast" that Gus has?? Sorry....I dont see it."You people point your 'f'in' finger and say theres the bad guy....what that make you....good?" Tony Montana

Re: Marc Bulger...wait just one minute here!
I would like to add another stat but I don't even know where to start. Do we have anybody with Hutchinson or Birk's talent?
This is their OL and depth
RT
62 R. Cook
72 M. Johnson
- RG -
64 A. Herrera
79 A. Hicks
- C -
78 M. Birk
J. Sullivan
- LG -
76 S. Hutchinson
79 A. Hicks
- LT -
74 B. McKinnie
To your point, Fargo, I agree, as far as talent there is major differences between Peterson and SJ, but Peterson played 12 games, SJ only 8, and that is huge
So there, no, there is no comparision, Marc is better anyday that Gus.
But we don't have to look into stats, who doesn't remember last years game against seattle? weren't we at the 1 yard line and he fumbled? it was not the OL, Linehan, or the sub-prime-crisis, it was all Gus.
Thank you for nothing Gus, good luck in Minn.Last edited by NY RAMFAN; -12-05-2008 at 05:29 PM.

Re: Marc Bulger...wait just one minute here!
I agree. Their O-line and defense is much better than ours. If Bulger had their weapons, he'd be doing great.
If we let Bulger go, he will end up lighting us up.
Lets fix the areas around Bulger before we go all out on him.
K? thanks.

Re: Marc Bulger...wait just one minute here!
Not even an equal match. bulger has a better throwing arm and is more accurate. Might as well ask the question if Bulger rates above or below T. Dilfer. Its often the team and system you play in. I make a bet that Brady doesn't do so well outside a system the Pats have in place, say like the Raiders

Re: Marc Bulger...wait just one minute here!
My biggest problem with Bulger is his pocket awareness. He doesnt feel it collapsing and when he does, he doesnt step up, step in, or move around. He just takes the sack. I see him brace for impact instead of trying to buy some time or throw the ball away, he tucks it, and lowers his head.
We all know that our QB is immobile, and i for sure don't expect the guy to break tackes and run er in for a score. But geez, he's gotta find a way to stay up-rite or have some type of escape plan. You would think that getting sacked 5 times a game would teach you to move alittle.

Re: Marc Bulger...wait just one minute here!
You missed the most important comparison in terms of this particular discussion -- salary. I think a lot of the vitriol aimed at Marc has to do with the amount of money we've invested in him. For the money, Frerotte has been a steal for the Vikings and they're still in a position to significantly invest elsewhere on the team to improve its chances. For the money, Bulger has been the worst value in the NFL and has handcuffed our ability to improve other parts of the team.
Give Bulger the contract that Frerotte has and everyone will still hate his play, but they probably wouldn't give him so much blame and so much of the responsibility.
