Meet the Rams Undrafted Free Agents ..
Tim Klutsarits, St. Louis Rams Examiner
July 30, 2011
The St. Louis Rams added 24 undrafted free agents to the roster officially on Friday. While most of the names will be players you have never or barely heard of, there are players on this list who will most likely be on the roster come opening day. More importantly for the Rams is to see if some of these players might be good enough to make a difference now and in the future. Here is a quick rundown of each player and whether they will have a shot to make a difference in 2011 and beyond.
Bryant Browning-Guard-Ohio State: If you want to root for someone to make the roster as an undrafted Free Agent this might be the guy. Browning is a three year starter at guard from Ohio State and was their captain. A high character guy who had hamstring issues during the Combine. He has had some problems with the pass rush though. Browning will have a shot at making the roster.
Tyler Donahue-Tackle-Bowling Green: Donahue was on a bad offensive line in college, but has the strength to give the NFL a shot. He is probably a long shot to even make the practice squad.
Kevin Hughes-Guard-SE Louisiana: Made the transition from guard to tackle in college and will be asked to try and play guard for the Rams. Clearly he has some versatility which could make him valuable for the Rams. With guard positions up for grabs he could have a shot of making the roster.
Randall Hunt-Tackle-Illinois: Started 23 games with the Illini and has very good size. More of a run blocker than a pass blocker. Will probably have a tough time making it onto the active roster.
Karri Kuuttila-Guard/Tackle-Lock Haven: Another offensive lineman who showed versatility during his college days playing both guard and tackle. At 6’6 he will be one of the bigger offensive lineman on the field.
Jacob McQuaide-Long Snapper-Ohio State: Bringing in a long snapper with Chris Massey on the team makes McQuaide nothing more than a “camp snapper.” A smart guy though. He is an aeronautical engineer major.
Beau Warren-Center-Virginia Tech: An Honorable Mention All-ACC Center who was the only senior on a Virginia Tech offense that was 14thrunning the football last season. Probably not much of a chance to make the Rams roster.
Damario Ambrose-Defensive End-Arkansas: Only 32 tackles and 3.5 sacks last year for the Razorbacks. Appears to have versatility to play both the end and tackle positions on rushing downs. Low performance in college may or may not translate into the NFL.
Kenneth Charles-Defensive End-Stephen F. Austin: Keep an eye on Charles in training camp. Charles moved from defensive tackle to end before his senior year in college and he exploded into a dominant player. Charles had 16 sacks and 25 tackles for loss last season. If he can make that sort of impact during August he might have a shot at a roster spot in September.
John Henderson-Defensive Tackle-Southern Miss: Not a lot of pass rush from Henderson in college, but he is considered a good run stuffer. Only 6’1 304 lbs. he is a bowling ball in the middle.
Arthur Thomas-Defensive Tackle-Arkansas Pine-Bluff: A three year starter at UAPB, Thomas will have his work cut out to make the roster. Thomas was the conference champion in the weight throw in track and field this year.
Teryl White-Defensive Tackle-NC Central: White had a disappointing senior season, but hopes to get his career started with the Rams. Had 158 tackles during his career at NC Central. A real long shot to make the team.
Timothy Atchison-Cornerback-Baylor: The Rams list him as a cornerback, but Atchison was a safety with Baylor. He had good production with 72 tackles last season. Could come in handy and might make the roster as a special teams specialist.
Travon Bellamy-Cornerback-Illinois: 70 tackles last season for the Illini shows that he can come up and play against the run. Had an up and down career in Champaign though.
John Dempsey-Safety-Villanova: Had a highly productive career at Villanova and would appear to be a Spags type of player. Special Teams will be the way that Dempsey makes the squad.
Dionte Dinkins-Cornerback-Fort Valley State: Had a lot of interest around the league, including the New York Giants. Could be a fit in the Spagnuolo system.
Christopher Smith-Cornerback-Northern Illinois: Played all of last season with a broken thumb which hurt his senior season. He did manage to still get three interceptions for the Huskies despite the injury.
Van Stumon-fullback-Arkansas: The Rams haven’t really used much of a fullback lately but Stumon might be useful for blocking purposes.
Eddie Wade-Running Back-Utah: Had a disappointing senior season with the Utes, but will be in the mix to make the roster as the running back position remains unsettled behind Jackson.
Jalil Carter-Wide Receiver-Akron: Not much production as a wide receiver, but did show some flashes in the kickoff return game. That will be his way to the roster.
Benjamin Guidguli-Tight End-Cincinnati: Wasn’t involved in the passing game too much with the Bearcats. Will have a tough time making the roster.
Schuylar Oordt-Tight End-Northern Iowa: Another tall athletic type of tight end for the Rams to try and figure out how to get in the rotation. A real long shot for being a contributor.
Pete Fleps-Linebacker-SMU: A decent player at SMU. Went to the same high school in Texas as former Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel. Will have to earn his way on the roster via special teams.
Taylor Potts-Quarterback-Texas Tech: Had two really nice seasons in Lubbock and was knocked because he comes from the spread system. Could have a shot at unseating Thaddeus Lewis for the third quarterback position.
More than one of these players will be on the opening day roster and some will make the practice squad. This is the list where scouts are truly judged. Can you find those diamonds in the rough? Maybe one of these players will be a starter for the Rams in the next three years. Their dreams to do that begin at training camp.
Re: Meet the Rams Undrafted Free Agents ..
I just wonder why there aren't more RBs on this list. Appeared to be a lot of good ones left undrafted.
Re: Meet the Rams Undrafted Free Agents ..
