Re: Miami Herald: Rams agree to terms with C Jason Brown

Since we just upgraded our center position, I think it makes it even a more evident time to address the o-line even further in the draft. We took the first step in solidifying the o-line, let's keep on going. I want to actually see our o-line upgraded to the max going into next season. I don't want another "okay we signed one o-line player, let's not worry about the o-line anymore" attitude.

    I'm hoping for this line:

    Pace
    Herman Johnson/Bell
    Brown
    Greco
    J. Smith/Monroe

    Rock on Rams!

So do Brett, Nick or Cory just get regulated to back-up/cut or are any of them skilled enough to move to either guard position to help out?

As much as I love Curry, I'm kind of wanting to go with J.Smith...just to coincide with this move.

Way I see it, we just made every other OLman's job easier just due to having a smart rock in the middle. If that is the case, then I really see us taking Curry if he is available. If not him, then Raji. I am excited.

I was afraid when I saw it that it was Fakir. I would like him to get a contract for a one year deal at a cheap cost to at worst be a body.

This move was HUGE! A solid, young big man in the center of the O-Line? Are you kiddin' me? This is EXACTLY what the Rams needed. The Rams O-line just got better by leaps and bounds. You build a winning team by building the foundation, which is the O and D lines. If the Rams sign one of the O-linemen at the #2 spot in the draft that many think they will, well.... Mr Jackson AND Mr Bulger are gonna be two really happy campers.

The sight of d-linemen blowing past our center will be a thing of the past. I'll say it again, this signing is absolutely fantastic.

TBH, I'd be happy with whoever(As long as it's not Stafford).
For once, I ACTUALLY trust the Rams FO.
Crabtree, Curry, Monroe, Raji, J. Smith...I don't see where we could go wrong.
All would fill positions of need too.

I'm HELLA geeked for the Draft. If we can find a way to keep Bartell and bring in Butler...I might actually cry. lol

BTW, I am so psych'd about this, I am posting on my iPhone from a bar where I just heard the news. A first for me.

First time in a long time I have been excited for moves our FO is doing and can't wait for the next surprise.

The deal is said to average $7.5 million a year only because $37.5 divided by five years comes out to be $7.5 million a year. That average is not reflective of how the contract is actually structured. Like most NFL contracts, the deal is likely back-loaded with lower salaries in the early years and higher salaries in the later years. The guaranteed money is likely spread out and thus can be pro-rated over the length of the deal. Even though the total cost of the contract is large, it shouldn't be that hard to get a reasonable first year cap charge.

    How specifically did we overpay?

Last year, the 31-year-old Alan Faneca was the top free agent interior lineman and signed a five year deal worth $40 million w/ $21 million in guaranteed money.

A year later the Rams sign the soon to be 26-year-old Brown, the year's best free agent interior lineman, to a deal the same length but for with less guaranteed money and a smaller total price.

I wouldn't classify that as overpaying. Brown isn't yet in Faneca's class as a guard, but he's younger, bigger, more versatile, and we signed him a year later for less money.

I'd REALLY be interested to hear who is going to be available in the second round that has the same talent as a guy slated to go in the Top Five in this draft...

My understanding is that Romberg, Leckey, and Withrow are all free agents right now. None of them are not under contract with the Rams, from what I can see.

Could a restructered and good O-line make Holt reconsider a contract reconstruction? If he thinks we might have a chance to play in the playoffs again?

A real solid move, this is just want we want..everybody is talking about how Jackson must be feeling but I reckon Bulger will be pretty happy, with no more LOW snaps and a huge body in front of him..

Again, where are you getting this overpaying information? That's market value for a veteran G/C in recent years.

Overpaying is what the Rams did with someone like Bennett who never started a full season. This isn't overpaying.
