Miklasz is heading from KSLG to WXOS

    By Dan Caesar

In the latest upheaval in St. Louis sports-talk radio, Post-Dispatch sports columnist Bernie Miklasz is on the move.

Miklasz is leaving KSLG (1380) to go to WXOS (101.1 FM), KSLG general manager John Helmkamp confirmed late Thursday. Miklasz' last day at KSLG is expected to be sometime next week. He probably will start at 101.1, which adopted the sports format in January, on April 6 — opening day for the Cardinals.

His move will cause significant retooling of the stations' lineups. Miklasz, who is KSLG's afternoon drive-time slot, is expected to be on at middays on 101.1 and probably cut into some of the airtime of Bryan Burwell and Pat Parris. At 1380, Kevin Slaten is expected to switch from middays to Miklasz's slot. Miklasz' current partner, Brian McKenna, probably will go to middays.

Miklasz and 101.1 program director Jason Barrett did not want to comment, but Helmkamp compared the move to putting a pending free-agent athlete on the market.

"Bernie's contract is up in July and we made him an offer that he let us know he wasn't going to accept," Helmkamp said. "We gave him permission to talk to 101. It's no different than the Blues trying to do something with (Keith) Tkachuk" at the trade deadline. "We knew we weren't going to retain him, so if you know you're going to lose the guy in three months you might as well change your station now and mold it the way you want."

Miklasz has the most information-packed local sports show, and is expected to take some of his regular contributors along.

"This was partially a financial move, because if we aren't going to have him, why pay him for three more months?'' Helmkamp asked. "You never want to lose a guy the quality of Bernie, we've had a fantastic relationship, but we believe our station now is positioned better financially than ever. We'll have the best two shows in the market in the most important day parts (Tim McKernan, Jim Hayes and Doug Vaughn in morning drive and Slaten in the afternoon). While we're not thrilled to lose Bernie, we have a lot of confidence in our lineup.''
