Martz also said that Jeff Smoker, a sixth-round pick last year, would be the backup quarterback behind Marc Bulger. Chris Chandler was the backup last season, Smoker was the third quarterback and had no game action. But Martz said he did a good job of picking up the system.

"He's really progressed," Martz said.

This is good. Smoker is a solid QB that made a bad decision in college. It dropped him from the 2nd or 3rd round to the 6th. If he's got his head on straight (which appears to be the case), he will be more than adequate as Bulger's back-up. Hopefully, we see a lot of Smoker this year.....doing clean up work after we post a 20 point lead going into the 4th Quarter.

I really like the idea of a talented young QB as the backup rather than a grey-haired veteran.
