Most Exciting Ram Ever In The Open Field

Which player in Rams history was the most exciting to watch with the ball in his hands in the open field?

Dickerson and Faulk were definite considerations, as was Az Hakim. In the end, though, I went with LeRoy Irvin. When that guy had the ball in his hands (particularly on punt returns), he was Deion Sanders-like. Best return specialist in Rams history, in my book.

Who can forget his 1981 performance against the Falcons:

    6 punt returns, 207 yards (NFL RECORD), 34.5 yards/return, 2 TDs (74, 84 yards) in Rams 37-35 victory.

Don't consider myself old school (despite my age), but Dickerson's the most amazing runner I've ever seen, including Sanders, Brown, Sweetness or anyone else you want to name.

That said, I also agree with AV - ED was not much of a juker, (if that's even a word).

For me, this is a no-brainer. Dickerson was/remains flat out the most exciting open field runner in Rams/NFL history. He was litterally breathtaking to watch and was the equivalent of a wide open passing attack. Powerful, fluid, graceful, with an incredible shift of gears that left pursuers in the dust. Seeing him in person with that unique upright running style was an awe inspiring experience every time. Oh how I lament what could have been had he remained a Ram.

I give a slight edge to Dickerson over Faulk.

Hard choice of Faulk over Dickerson, but I went with Faulk because of his his threat as a receiver as much as a runner.

Although my vote would go to ED, I was at the Packers game in 1985 when Ron Brown returned two kickoffs for TD's. I was in the endzone that he ran towards and it was amazing watching the holes open and seeing Brown dart through. OR should I say "blast" through? His speed was amazing.... Afterall, he was a world-class sprinter. I never figured out why they didn't throw more quick in routes to him and let him take off.

That's easily Dickerson. The prettiest, most graceful runner the NFL has ever seen.

Marshall, Marshall, Marshall Faulk as Boomer would say.

I wasn't old enough to see Dickerson but from the highlights I have seen he could easily be my choice.

All depends on what you really need at the time. If you need someone to out run the defense go with ED. If you need to run around the defense you go with Faulk. If you need to go through a defense go with Jackson.

    In tight quarters........Faulk, no question.

Open space.........hmm, Faulk, ED, Faulk, ED, Faulk, ED......there's really no wrong answer, is there?

When Az Hakim burst on the scene in 99, I do not remember any other player giving me that wow factor, even M Faulk. Ron Brown was one of the main reasons I became a Ram supporter so Ill give him the second spot, followed by Faulk.

When I first read the title to this poll my instant answer was Dickerson. Back in the day when Dickerson was "The Offense" there was no player more exciting to watch. Mike, your post captures that excitement very well.

Hmm, Elroy 'Crazylegs' Hirsch, a classic NFL great. I was automatically eye-convinced that I'd seen him somewhere on the list. This HOF Ram had some ... interesting plays on the open field with his unusual style of running. Perhaps top ten.

Marshal Faulk was the most exciting to watch in the open field. ED was straight ahead and gone, but Faulk spread out the field. Faulk did it from and out of the backfield. He lined up as a receiver, there was nothing more exciting to watch than seeing him break tackles and elude defenders. Don't get me wrong I did enjoy watching ED but Faulk IMO is my choice!
