Actually, before Green went down, NFL commentators were predicting good things for the Rams offense. I forget where I saw the old footage, but the Rams didn't come out of nowhere.

After Rams went 1 - 15 last year they knew they were gonna make the playoffs this year. It happens every year. Look at Lions, Browns, Bills, 49RS, Raiders, etc.

They may have predicted improvement, particularly on offense, but NOBODY predicted that the Rams would go 13-3, score 500+ points and win the Super Bowl.

As for this year, I predicted the Rams would finish 7-9. But does that mean if the Rams win this week I'll expect them to lose their final two games? Of course not. I go into every week thinking the Rams can win.

Re: The most idiotic comment I've ever read

Simply substituting the words "many people thought" instead of "the Rams thought" would have solved the problem been both accurate and fair. Sloppy writing, maybe, but hardly something to get overly riled up over.
But I 100% agree that athletes go into games thinking they can win- unlike fans, who treat many contests with a degree of pessimism.

At no point in the article does he say that the Rams PLAYERS, thought they were a 4 win team. He could just as well be talking about the Rams community (fans, media etc.), in which case this article would be spot on.

But then again. Making assumptions - and cry wolf - is much more fun

His words were unambiguous. He said "the Rams thought..." That means the team.

Make excuses if you want, but that's crappy writing, and this guy's supposed to be a professional.

Re: The most idiotic comment I've ever read

No owner, GM, coach or player is going to go public before a season starts and say they are going to be a 4 win team. Not because they don't believe it to be true but because it would turn off the fan base. Behind the scenes they may have thought that to be a realistic goal.

The 1999 team isn't a good comparison at all. That team obtained a new QB and Marshall Faulk. While Rams fans may not have been thinking Super Bowl they were thinking a huge improvement over the 3-13 1998 season. I don't think many here or anywhere were predicting the Rams to win 6 of their first 13 games this season or even that Bradford would start the season as the Rams starting QB.

I don't have problems with the article.

Well... you're wrong. Many here predicted 7-9 wins for the Rams, and most people here thought Bradford would be the opening day starter.

I am old but I seem to remember most picked 5 or 6 wins. Of course some picked more and some less. Some even predicted 10 I believe.

The Rams thought they were a four-win team that might get a few breaks to get six wins.
People can spin this any number of ways, but that statement sounds like it came straight from some anonymous hack instead of an anointed HOF writer. It qualifies as idiotic in every sense of the word.

That statement goes well with the theme of the thread Since if the words were unambiguous, then we would not be disagreeing.

Then you don't understand what the word "unambiguous" means. It means "not subject to multiple reasonable interpretations." You have to include the word reasonable, as anything can be subject to multiple interpretations if you put reason aside or simply ignore the definitions of words.

I deal with contracts every day. I have to be very precise with language. All writers should aspire to the same standard. Clayton's statement was careless and, in my opinion, idiotic.
