Most sacks by a Ram in one season:

    1. Kevin Carter (1999) - 17
    2t. Kevin Greene (1989) - 16.5
    2t. Kevin Greene (1988) - 16.5
    4. Robert Quinn (2013) - 15.....and counting.

(yes, I understand that Deacon and the Blood probably had seasons with more sacks than these guys, but this is from the official stats.)

Who at the beginning of the season thought Quinn would be this dominant?

Ah that would be Chris Long who proclaimed last year that Robert was going to get more than he has! Forget his exact words but it amounted to that...

I have the book "Headslap", written by Deacon Jones and John Klawitter back in the late 90's. In the book, Deacon laments the sack not being 'official" until 1982. Spurred by this "oversight", a gentleman named John Turney viewed every game film going back some 30-40 years. and compiled a list of the top 400 or so sack leaders. Of course, Deacon was the unofficial all-time sack leader as of the time of this publication (since broken), and some of his personal totals are a bit inflated and conflict with Rams media guide numbers but are impressive nonetheless. A couple of interesting tidbits from the Rams media guide:

    Deacon: 1964- 22 sacks Youngblood: 1979- 18.0 sacks
    1965- 19 sacks
    1966- 18 sacks
    1967- 21 sacks ***all unofficial
    1968- 22 sacks

Deacon: 159.5 career sacks Youngblood: 151.5 career sacks

In any event, Quinn is about to enjoy some elite company!

And sacks aren't everything either. Consider the forced fumbles and recoveries; the defensive points scored and the lanes created for the other guys form his double teams.

Let's see, the Bucs QB Mike Glennon has been sacked 31 times in 11 games. Something tells me Quinn will be climbing the charts this Sunday.

Would be really nice to see. And I want us to win this game badly. Getting to 7-8 with a back-up QB and a chance at a .500 season is a nice motivation given where we stood after the Carolina game.

8-8 would be quite an accomplishment after all we've been through this year. It would also mean we beat Seattle in Seattle. That would send me into the off-season feeling pretty damned good.

    Great post!!!
However, Deacon's great achievement happened in a different era. Now that sacks are being recorded, the head slap that Deacon made so famous is illegal as well as many of the moves he used to get to the QB. All things being equal, Quinn would be far better than Deacon as he would have far fewer penalties.

I am not slamming Deacon at all, just pointing out he played in a different NFL than Quinn does today.

Re: Most sacks by a Ram in one season:

The meaning of the term sack has changed over time, which partially accounts for the differential in how sacks are counted. Early on, a sack referred to a tackle in the pocket, or at least one where the defender chased the guy out of the pocket and tackled him. Of late, ANY tackle behind the line of scrimmage counts as a sack.

I did a business deal once with a former rams player, who was a teamate of both Deacon Jones and Youngblood. This guy played in the league a number of years and was around the game for many years after he retired and remained a fan into the current era. His contention was that as a pure pass rusher, there has never been a guy as good as Deacon Jones. He also points out that Deacon didnt play the run much and that merlin olsen was so dominant that he played the run effectively for both the end and tackle spots, allowing Deacon to do his thing.

At any rate, I'm sure proud to have Mighty Quinn in the Rams DL. Deacon would probably be proud too.

Robert Quinn+Chris Long = The Demonic Duo.

I refuse to believe that those guys are human. I know sometimes they shows signs of humanity, but when I watch them closely, it just seems evil what they do to lineman ESPECIALLY tight ends.

I also recall Aaron Rodgers saying he was going to be a top pass rusher this pre-season. I guess getting by him gave Rodgers an inside scoop.

It's too bad that Bradford got hurt early in the season because if the Rams were a playoff contender then Quinn would be a legit DPOTY candidate for 2013. It's too bad that you need to be on a playoff team to win the award. I don't like weighing too heavily into team success when selecting individual awards like this because great seasons like this get overlooked due to factors beyond the player's control.
