I believe it was around March of 2002. I was still reeling from the Rams loss in the Superbowl to the Patriots. Adding salt to the wounds, my best friend who had moved from Los Angeles to Boston when we were in high school, eventually gave up his Rams loyalty to become a Pats fan, and was loving life, while stealing history from my Rams.
I went to sleep, and had a dream:
I dreamed that the Rams cut Kurt Warner. I dreamed that they fired Mike Martz. I dreamed that year after year, the Rams were terrible and instead of the Greatest Show on Turf, they had become one of the most boring offenses in the NFL, and the Patriots went on to win, and win, and win. I dreamed that after trading Kurt Warner, he went on to create the sequel to the GSOT with another team, and people were talking about him being the MVP, while my Rams squandered back to their form from the 90's and being the butt of all NFL jokes.
Then I woke up in a sweat, realized it was just a dream, and thought..."thank god, we still have Martz and Warner and I'm sure we're gonna get those Patriots next year!!!"
Thank God it was only just a dream, because no team in their right mind would fire a winning coach a few years removed from a superbowl appearance, and discard the most successful QB they ever had. After all, they hadn't even been to the superbowl in 20 years, and had been twice within a few years. Why would you fix it if it wasn't broken?
(just thinking about this as we head to AZ to play the Cards.)
