New RB Option? Former Giant Derrick Ward Cut By Bucs

The fact that he could not make the Bucs does not fill me with a great deal of confidence, but he was with the Giants when Spags was there.

    Discuss.

It sounds like he's lost a few steps at the ripe nfl age of 30. I would pass.

Ward hasn't had a strong preseason and might have suffered a concussion in an exhibition game earlier this month, but sadly he may be better than the young guys we have now in the backfield. I wouldn't be surprised if the Rams signed him, but I'm not expecting him to do much damage while he's here.

Won't there be more rbs waived when teams pare their rosters down to the 53 man limit? I doubt we have to focus on Ward .. I'd love to see Billy's shortlist of rbs he thinks will be available ...

Also had something to do with the fact Ward was set to earn $3.25 million in base salary this season, which is quite a bit for a back-up RB.

Signing someone like Ward would be very smart. An older RB to fill the 2nd spot who should still be an upgrade over anyone else. It would fill a void this year and put the Rams in position to draft a future starter/someone to compliment Jackson in the meantime without controversy. Eventually Ward would possibly be demoted to third or released. Unless he shows his gold and remains useful. If we sign him, I hope Spags and Jackzilla can whip his butt into shape. He was great as a Giant and actually fairly good last year. Just got off to a slow start, needs to work on his conditioning is all really.

Unless someone younger and better becomes available this is actually a pretty darn good option for St. Louis. Probably will sign more than one RB anyway, why not have Ward plus someone else.

Yes, there will probably be additional running backs available as rosters continue to be trimmed prior to the start of the regular season. If you're the Rams, do you jump on Ward now to ensure that you get a veteran familiar with your coach, or do you wait to see who else becomes available while potentially losing Ward to another team? It will be interesting to see how Spags plays this. I'd be tempted to wait.

For a player that's his age who just got beat out for the #2 job, it is. But for an effective back-up, I think teams would be willing to pay that. I mean, if you're the Carolina Panthers, would you pay $3.5 million to make sure you keep Jonathan Stewart as your back-up? I probably would.

I think we can do better. By Sunday morning after the cutdowns we should be able to claim a RB with better upside than Derrick Ward.

As an aside, I also don't discount the chances of picking up a WR.

    Go Rams!

rob: Now that Derrick Ward was cut from the Bucs, any interest in him from the Rams, he has to be better than what we have a backup RB now

    Jim Thomas:
To me, this one makes a lot of sense, particularly since Spags has a history with the guy. Keep in mind, during the free agency period following the '08 season - Spags' first offseason with the team - he called Ward during free agency to see if he'd be interested in coming here. Now maybe Ward still won't want to come here to back up Jackson, but it's better than not having a job.

    Hmmm .. Interesting ..

Unfortunately I do believe that he is better than what we currently have. The real questions are how much is the right amount to pay him and would he even come here?

He isnt going to start anywhere. So I don't see why he wouldn't come here. If he had sense he would realise while Jackson is our number 1, we will be a running team with no proven backup RB, so he WILL get carries

He is too fat. Until he pares down his weight, he is not a viable option....everything else aside. He did not try to lose weight to make the Bucs - why would he try to do so for the Rams?

The Bucs have better depth than we do at runningback. I'd imagine he could latch on here if the coaches want him and he wants to be here.

he's a guy worth taking a look at, it would depend on how he is doing physically.

Well, from what I've read here and online so far, I'd say: 35% YAY / 65% NAY (myself included).
